State police: Man killed after shooting at police officers at tornado relief distribution center in Mayfield

- MAYFIELD, KY — A man was killed by law enforcement Wednesday morning after state police say he approached officers patrolling the tornado relief distribution center at the Mayfield-Graves County Fairgrounds and fired multiple gunshots at them.
Officers with the Frankfort Police Department assisting with recovery efforts in in Graves County were patrolling the fairgrounds around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday when an armed man approached them, according to Kentucky State Police.
State police say the man fired multiple gunshots, and the officers returned fire. The man was shot during the exchange, and Mayfield-Graves County EMS transported him to Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield. The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital by the Graves County coroner.
Kentucky State Police says the Frankfort Police Department asked the state law enforcement agency's Critical Response Team to investigate the incident.
No officers or other members of the public were injured in the incident, KSP says.
The distribution center at the fairgrounds was closed Wednesday for the investigation. It is scheduled to reopen at 11 a.m. Thursday.
In the meantime, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says several nearby churches are offering basic supplies. Additionally, anyone in the community with unmet needs can call the Tornado Information Hotline at 270-727-5114.
