Finish mower gear box used for auger

I bought it mainly because it was $100. I have a zt and brush hog so it's not absolutely critical that I have it. It would be nice to have it because the tractor is more comfortable than the zt but I would still need the zt.

I thought this up yesterday when I was pissed. I figured it would be better than shooting it and making a fish structure in my pond with it. I will go up and take pics and put them on.

Finish mower gearboxes typically are geared for an output speed of 1000 rpm, or at least all the ones I've seen do. One designed for a 540 rpm input has a gear ratio of 1:1.92 and one designed for a 1000 rpm input is a 1:1 gear ratio. You would NOT want to use that for a posthole digger as the auger would turn 5-10 times faster than you'd want.

Can you snap a pic with the belt threaded thru the pulleys as you had it? A wide shot which shows all the pulleys and idlers would be best.

I suspect that this gear box is a 1:1 and uses the larger pulley to increase the spindle speeds. It would still be too fast for a phd imo.

Ok I will thread the belt back thru the pulleys. It's broke but I can still give you a good representation of if. It raining now so I will do it in the morning.

The amount of time I have wasted on it I would rather shoot it. But would the gearbox be worth $100 on C/L ?

will wait for other pictures per what jenkinsph noted, but honestly, looks like deck is still in good shape, at least from top views, along with all the roller wheels / gauge wheels still all in good shape as well. as long as the deck is not completely rusted out, and all the spindles / pulleys rotated freely, and everything lined up correctly for the belt, it would be a nice finishing mower! i would pick it up the entire deck for 100 bucks maybe 180 bucks, if i lived near ya.

Now that I looked at the pics it looks pretty decent. I would check that all spindles and pulleys are solid not vibrating or loose shafts. Make sure the blades are sharp and the belt has enough tension. Slipping belts build up a lot of heat in a hurry and then break. Check pulleys for anything that might be abrasive.

I would think this can be made to work.
