Finish Mower in Rough Pasture

I have a somewhat new pasture. It's still kind of rough and has lots of weed in with the grass. I'm looking at a new tractor and would like to purchase a larger finish mower. The pasture has lots of trees but I think I can work around them with a 7-8' finish mower. My Problem is I have three horses and don't want to cut the grass to low. Finish mowers see to set from 1-6" a ride on four wheels. If the pasture is rough will it fall in all these dips and dull the blades to fast? SHould I stick with a bush hog style rotary mower? I do have several field trails that I need to bush hog so I must purchase a 6' bush hog anyway?

Would the finish mower cut be to low to be good for the horses"

From what I have seen a brush hog would seem the way to go. As to the horses, mine have always seemed to like shorter grass. Cows seem to like the tall stuff.

Take a look at the Woods RM 990. It is a very heavily-built commercial finish mower with swing-back blades which are great if the field is rough. It is available with four castors so it floats independent of the tractor. I've had one for several years - it has made some pretty rouch fields look great. Cutting height is adjustable - mine is up around 7" at the moment and could go higher but that seems to clear most of my obstacles if I plan my moves. There is a review of it here The unit is a little pricey but for a rough field there is no other product I've seen that comes close. Woods blades are about $85 for the set of 6. Agri-supply has them for less. Hope this is useful.
