Fire Pit

Hey, that looks great! You're a lot faster than we were. You're gonna love it! Not sure if the fire brick is necessary, but some have said regular rock can explode with high heat, so I opted to do the fire brick. Cheap insurance. We've had a few fires now and love the addition to our yard. So much that we did a little more landscaping. Eventually hope to do bluestone around the pit and add a walkway to the house. we made it a little big which makes starting fires a little harder but we can fit a lot of people around it. Cooks a mean Smore:)

I really like your pit, and I saw that episode too.

I usually just pile up a bunch of sandstone (very large pieces). Even the big ones crack from the heat. I normally tear it apart at the end of the year and dump the whole thing in my shooting pit. Then I have to restack more sandstone. I really like the firebrick idea, maybe I'll try that.

I do have a question, do you cook on it? If so, do you have a big enough metal grate for over the top? I was wondering about something 6' for cooking on. If I make a fire I am having dogs, burgers, or something other than smores and marshmallows.

I just broke out the welder to make one for it last night... Nothing like fresh corn cooked over the fire.. :)

If ours wasn't so big, I'd consider a grate of some sort. The gas grill is close by so It works out well. We find most people just like to kick back, put the feet up and watch the fire. Very relaxing. I do need to make some loooooong sticks for marshmellows and hot dogs. Regular ones just aren't long enough. Probably the best addition to the yard you'll ever make no matter how you build one. Ohh.....where do you buy flamethrowers? :)

I mentioned this before, so pardon the repeat : We have a fire pit that is just a hole, lined around the perimeter with stones. It's down by the river where my friends like to camp. I'd like to make a grate for it, as we do a lot of cooking on it. I'm keeping my eye on the metal bin at the dump for parts. After dinner we sit around in our folding chairs and talk. The girls, and kids do the smores. Everyone likes to give the fire a poke now and again. We call it changing the channel. We kept burning up the "poker", so one guy carved a small cedar into a "red-neck remote". It has a play, pause, and stop button, and gets a lot of use. It has held up real well too.
