Fire, tractor

Much of Oklahoma caught fire yesterday. My shop burned pretty hot. Tractor was inside. It's covered in Black soot from plastic and vinyl burning. I did start the tractor but it sounds different. It's a new yanmar ym342 with 48 hours. I did call in a claim. Im going to ask adjuster to have it looked at. Also, I may use this as a reason to get the ym359 . We are safe, grateful and tired. House is standing. Shop is rough. Thoughts on Tractor? It had to be a couple hundred degrees in the shop. Should I have insurance pay to get it inspected?

UNderstand that all to well.. Had wild fire come down to my "defencive space" (100 clear area around house) a few years ago.... Sorry for your loss.... Nothing funny about fire....

You need to look at building fire reservoir, (aka pond), with a fire pump.

A friend retired to a small town in Arizona. The insurance was high because the only fire hydrant was at the volunteer firehouse over a mile away.

His solution was to build a fire suppression reservoir, (it bore a striking resemblance to a swimming pool) on the hill above his house, and running the four-inch drain line to a fire standpipe installed at the county road easement in front of his house. Instant fire hydrant, which lowered his insurance enough it paid off in ten years.

The Volunteer fire department didn't have a big enough engine to make the insurance company happy, and didn't want to get one because their fire house was too small to house a bigger engine.

So, he donated an acre to the fire department on the corner of his land, next to his house, and ran a fund raiser to get a metal building put on it to house the new larger engine, which they got surplus from the government for the cost of shipping. And he joined the volunteer fire department so he would have the keys.

Again, his insurance went down.

Sometimes thinking outside the box and spending a little can save a bundle over time.

I will certainly get a tank and pump. In this case, we weren't even home. By the time we got close, deputies had set up barricades. This was 70 mph wind 11 pct humidity. Fire depts weren't even trying to save structures. Rough day for OK

I apparently live close to you, but didn't have any fire damage on my property.

I also bought a Yanmar tractor (probably from the same dealer as you) a few months ago.

You pay premiums for insurance, why not use it? Submit a claim for fire damage, and consequential damage to anything else that looks like it was hot. Then let the adjusters sort it all out.

We are up in Logan county. I bought mine at the Yukin store. I'm thinking bout getting a second one, smaller for mowing and landscape stuff. I really like mine so far. 50 hours in. Glad you are safe

I am sorry to hear about the damage you had and hope the insurance company is reasonable and hassle free. With that being said take pictures of everything! If it comes to a fight, then photos will help. That fire came so close, truly scary.

How much physical damage is there to the tractor? Can you post pictures of it? I would disconnect the battery for now, if there is a short due to burnt wiring you don't want it starting another fire. I would check the air cleaner and make sure that it is clean and the filter housing has no obstructions. I would then check the hose running from the cleaner to the engine for any holes, don't want to suck any of the ash that you have floating around. Once you post some pictures of the tractor we might have some more advice.

I cannot imagine the stress your dealing with given the situation your in.

It is probably fine, however I would disconnect the battery for now. I have had four vehicles catch fire on me, three were electrical fires so I am paranoid. I would clean it off then look over it with a fine tooth comb before running it much, unless you have to. A dealer might be able to look it over for a reasonable price.
