First day of the rest of my life

Congratulations.

As an electric system operator I know what your job was like.

I am 2 yrs into the operator job with 15 left to retirement. Previous I was a relay tech. I took the job to benefit my family and it seems it has just as much detriment. Most of the cost was expected, it comes out of my *** in stress, loss of sleep and long hours. No problem, im the husband and father thats what we do. The underestimated balance is on my wife.

It is funny how mgt regards you as a lazy turd because when they grace the control room with their presence, you are monitoring the system. They soon forget when the poo hits the fan, you are the deciding factor in how things go.

there is one disadvantage to being retired (and I've been semi-retired since 94)
When you wake up in the morning................ you're already at work

Congrats on your first day of retirement. I figure you may already be up.

I agree that each day will feel like Saturday, but you might even think each day feels like your birthday.

I too did a similar job for Plains Marketing Canada. I was a control center operator for several pipelines in Canada and the US. I could never have lasted for 16 years.

Unless you pretty much have your retirement time spoken for, you might consider negotiating some part time or consulting work. It's good to keep your hand in something.

+1 on that. I "retired" a little over 5 years ago, but still do some freelance work in my field. Sometimes things get a bit busier than I'd prefer, but the money's good and the longer I can go without having to raid the IRA the better.

The wife would like to do some traveling, but I did that for a living for way too many years to have much enthusiasm for it. I did promise her one trip.

Congrats CF. In exactly 43 days I promise to post a similar message. It won稚 have the pictures because of my employer痴 policy on photography, but the sentiment will be the same!!!

I was not supposed to take any pictures but what are they going to do? Fire me? I figured, no one can really see anything that matters.

Good luck on your upcoming retirement.

Looking at all the computers and monitors...I bet you will be glad to let someone else sit behind them for a change. That's the way my job was. A new life awaits! Now you will be in full control of what you do and it is wonderful!

I can tell you I never went home physically tired, but my brain was fried sometimes.:confused2:

Congratulations... as busy as you are I'm sure you have plans to keep you busy for a very long time.

It's a good feeling to know you are valued and crucial to the operation... sometimes it is not until you are not there that it fully sinks in.

If you are inclined... it would be great to have updates from time to time on the retirement side of life.

My supervisor is and has been a nervous wreck since I announced retiring. He never had to be concerned about what goes on in the control room. I even worked his job longer than he has. Like I said earlier, there are several new guys and they haven't been turned into diamonds yet. The days will come, that I know for sure.

I have had 2 plant managers that really understood when I was sitting back with my feet up on the board, we were making the most money possible. The others were to self important to understand.
