- Getting old. Sold the ranch. Sold the tractors. Moved back to the city.
Got a chance to try out my new Huskee LT4200 lawn tractor today (42" mower, 18 HP B&S engine, hydraulic drive). Mowed about 1/2 acre in the almond orchard (up to 12" weeds, moderately uneven ground). The mower did fine so long as I took my time and didn't lug the engine by trying to cut too fast. I'll use it on about 1.5 acres of landscaping around my place (eventually).
The hydraulic drive is nice. Took a little practice to get used to the "throttle" on the left fender. I have a Kubota B7510HST tractor and my right foot was trying to do the throttling on the LT. After 3 hours in the saddle, that tendency disappeared.
Paid $999 at TSC. Bought a 3-year service plan for $179.
I looked over the Deere, Toro, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, Craftsman, etc. options before going the cheap (oops, inexpensive) route. Couldn't justify spending $1500-2500 to get 10 years of reliable service from the high-quality LTs instead of 4-5 years from one of those MTD-built cheapies. If I can get 3+years out of the LT 4200, I figure I'll still be ahead of the game. And I have my backside protected with a relatively inexpensive service plan.
Besides, with the less-reliable Huskee I'll be able to go mower shopping sooner , assuming the Huskee doesn't last for 10-15 years, like some of the MTD stuff apparently does.
