First pair of bibs!

It seems there are two types of overalls bieng discussed here....

overalls, like farmers, train engineers, etc... wear
and
outerwear, like winter wear, etc...

What concerns me most is the possibly improper use of the term suspenders to describe the straps that go over the shoulders to hold the overalls in place.

Those were always referred to properly as galluses.

Some refer to a pair of suspenders as galluses but I have always heard overall straps/suspenders referred to as galluses.

Knew of a guy who always wore overalls and left one gallus unhitched. He even named his ranch the 'One Gallus Ranch'.

Hmmm. That's what we called them too, but when I made my post, I figured nobody would know what I was talking about if I used the term "gallus", so I used the term "suspenders". I hated those darn things; Mom's old ringer washing machine would eat the buttons off the bib; I ended up pulling the "ear" through the gallus buckle and inserting a match stick through the hole where the button had been. Of course the buttons on the side would come off too; made them nice and airy.

That's an advantage of overall's. Being able to open the sides a little when needed. :D

Or a good meal and a few beverages.
Or a hot day when you could use some "air conditioning".

If I remember correctly, the kids version of the old Roundhouse overalls had two buttons on each side, so you could just open the top one if you were a bit shy. I had two kinds; one was regular denim color and the other was striped. My recollection was that a pair of overalls was about a dollar cheaper than a pair of blue jeans, so we got to wear overalls. Our folks (when they had the money) would buy us boys each a couple pair of overalls and pair of brogans that were about 3 sizes too big, and we wore them till they fell off our feet. We would cut cardboard to go in the bottom when the soles were worn through...and they all did eventually...so our Big Chief tablet was a bit floppy with no cardboard back to it.

The old grade school we attended back then (we lived in Pierce City Mo.) was atop Central hill, and it was old even then. It had no A/C, and I can remember sitting at my desk after recess or lunch, sweating and opening the top button of my overalls (pronounced ovah-halls). Man, this post is bringing back the memories. The "rich" kids there had a little clique that I never made it into; the prerequisite was that you had to wear blue jeans and a Captain Marvel sweat shirt.

Sorry...don't mean to hijack the thread...but I guess I don't know when to stop. I recall the old lunch room; they had shelves where they put the brown bag lunches (we didn't have a hot lunch program) and the smell I still remember. I suppose 100 years or so of baloney, bread and jelly, apples, oranges, peanut butter and boiled eggs left an indelible mark on that old room...(sigh).

My Dad would not let us wear overalls or jeans as it reminded him of the nasty factory jobs that he had all thru his uneducated life. He wanted us to get that education. We did, with college degrees. And now I've have the choice to wear the bibs for the good that they do as I pursue the chores of a rural life. And 2Lane's story I can relate to about newspaper wrapped lunch, shoes with holes stuffed with cardboard. There was no free lunch, free medical care nor "Nike" mentality in those days. ....this is on topic I think.
