Today Sept. 20th, 2005 at 1pm EST I planted four 25 feet rows of Radishes, Two rows of Jumbo Radishes and Two rows of Cherry Radishes. The radishes are planted in raised hills to insure better growth.

I will be planting Kale and Mustard later this evening and have pictures of all of them.

( Jim, it looks like you have a good start on a fall garden. I hope you will continue to add plantings of turnips, probably up until Nov. 1. Those turnips will need to be thinned just as soon as they get big enough to make "salad." Those you leave after thinning will then have room to make roots and spread out and make lots of greens.

Even though you put down chicken manure, you will still need to add a little nitrogen. The nitrogen in the manure isn't available to the plant all at once. Don't get me wrong; chicken manure is very, very good fertilizer, and will continue to provide some N throughout the winter.

You might also want to thin some of the collard plants as they get about six to eight inches tall, and transplant those you pull up. Set them about 12 inches apart and they will make some big collards in a hurry.

Here is a picture of a collard patch I had several years ago. The pictures were probably made about the middle of November.

Now that's some collards. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for the advice. I will be doing as you say with the collards and turnips. Maybe I could get with you sometime and learn some tricks of the trade. I appreciate your help.

Thanks again!

I planted Crimson Giant Radishes, Cherry Radishes, Kale and Curly Mustard today. That should spice things up a bit /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I can't wait until I get a irrigation system installed. Dragging the hose for the sprinkler with over 600 feet of 5/8 hose is getting old mighty quick. Down hill is fairly easy but up hill is a killer. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Today I have a good report. The Grass on the left roadway is coming up very good and strong. I will have pictures of it later today or tomorrow. It is coming through the straw well enough to see from a distance.

Ok ladies and gentleman. I am looking for a small wood stove that will heat about 900 to 1200 square feet. I have a family that will be going without heat this winter if I can't find them a stove. They have some wood from me where I cleared my land and they cut and busted it themselves. The old stove they had is in terrible shape and in not safe to operate. If anyone has an old used stove or knows of one please PM me here, or email me at bsm357@aol.com .

They have two children at home and were laid off from one of the local plants. Both the mother and father are going to Technical School to learn another trade so they can get another job. They just need help to get through the winter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your most valuable time and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Jim Bonham

Could you PM me and maybe send your phone number in a Private Message. Also please let me know if it is a Free Standing Unit and approximately how much it weighs. I will check into the freight and see how much it would cost to get it shipped to SC. It would be greatly appreciated if I can find a way to get it to them. Thank you. I look forward to getting your PM soon. Also if you have a digital camera... please take a few pictures of it so I can get the home prepared for it and we can just set it up as soon as it is received. Also we will need measurements where the pipe comes out and the floor space it needs to be safe if in fact it is a Free Standing Stove.

Sincerely,
Jim

Anyone have a wood stove closer just in case the freight is too much for me to handle? It shouldn't take too big of stove in our area to heat 900 to 1200 square feet unless we have a really harsh winter. However... the weather has been crazy lately so I guess we could have a harsh winter. We use to have them before they built the lake in out area.

Jim, I guessing the freight from New England would be cost prohibitive, however I've been checking the classifieds lately and have seen some woodstoves locally (NH) for under a hundred $. One was a name brand (Vermont Castings) as well. Have you looked in a local paper? There should be some for less than it would cost to get a free one shipped.
Just thinking out loud. Good luck.

You're probably correct on the shipping. It would be nice if we had a Truck Driver as a member that runs East Coast. Could be a solution to shipping. I am watching the papers in our area as well. I am glad we have some time to shop to find a stove. Fortunately our cold weather don't normally start until late November or mid December.
