First time using a rear blade, man I really suck!

Al, I'd be interested in seeing your above mentioned set-up. The tongue jack idea has me thinking. The receiver tube stock would make installing/removal easy. Bob

Can't move material laterally and crown with the box blade

This statement is not accurate. I have a box blade with a large roller in the back c/w a hydraulic top link so that I can control the depth of cut. It's slow going but you cut from the edges and dump in the middle of the road. This establishes a crown. After your done cutting down the edges you go up and down the road and level. It's a bit time consuming. (Thankfully I have a hydrostatic transmission) but very easy to do with the rear roller.

As others have said...gauge wheels make a huge difference. They will keep the implement from wanting to "dig in". I built a rake and the wheels make it easy to grade most materials. A few passes and you're good to go.

You've done a good job...it'll just be easier/quicker with the wheel!

If you can't find a gauge wheel to adapt to the blade, look for a local fabricator and I'm sure he could help you out. It would be money well spent.

In case you were serious about buying a gauge wheel, here is the parts diagram for the optional hydraulic gauge wheel for the 35 series rear blades.
They don't list a part number for the kit itself but I'm sure a 2 minute call to Messick's would provide you the info you need.

I wanted a gauge wheel for my rbt4096 but for some reason they don't make it for that model.

Hi Bob. Nothing to take a picture of yet. The receivers are on the blades now but I haven't got the wheel assembly made yet and that may not happen for a while. The receivers are very handy for moving trailers around the yard. I also welded a couple of short sections of receiver tube vertical on the blade frames (2 on each) to store the receivers when not needed.

Finished the problematic section headed down to the bridge. Still need one more load of material to get the edges above the level of the ditches but was able to get an aggressive crown on it.

Top section is still all F'ed up like a football bat. Will probably box blade it all flat, then get another load spread and use that to crown

I have a regular back blade and a box blade. I have a receiver hitch tube on the rear of both for moving trailers around . The next project it to mount a gauge wheel to some receiver stock so I can put it on easily when needed. Also thinking of mounting the gauge wheel to a trailer tongue jack on this tube to allow easy up and down adjustment of the blade .

Soldier, your road is looking pretty good in my opinion. In a short amount of time it looks like you've made a lot of progress learning the blade.
In the link to the gauge wheel I posted before, it did list a manual kit for about $550 if you were interested.

That's a good idea to add a gauge wheel in the receiver hitch location. I had welded a hitch on my box blade to tow around my log splitter, but never thought of the gauge wheel.

I can actually see the value of having a gauge wheel on the box blade as well, albeit not as much as the rear blade.
