Just as a side note CADplans... I've found that there is a rpm 'sweet spot' for doing all of my non-pto work. It's a titch above the 2000 mark.

Low or High, a smidge above 2000 revs and I can (and have) work all day, and in 4WD. Fuel economy is great at that mark... an 8 hour day of field fetching and loading 4x5 round bales = 20 litres of fuel to top-up for the next day.

That speed of just over 2,000 rpms is also the sweet spot for my 4105.
I had never heard the tractor run at PTO speed under a load before I got this mower.

When I tried the flail mower, all I had to mow was some winter left over grass that was about a foot tall.
The tractor never labored mowing that grass, even though the mower is 90" wide.

The IH 584 is my loader/forks tractor,, and the 584 runs the JD 390 flail,,
so, the IH ain't going nowhere!! :thumbsup:

The same with the JD 650, I mowed in the garden with the 650 today.
I have always kept at least 3 running tractors, set up for different tasks.
In the past, I had one diesel, and two gasoline machines.

Now, I have switched to all diesel for utility,,
I do have the Gravely's, they are all gas,, but, those are more for exercise, than real work.

My tractor is normally aspirated, and the difference in fuel consumption between piddling about (box blading, pulling trees) at idle and heavy PTO work (stump grinding, mowing) is spectacular.

9-13mph cutting grass lol, holy smokes that's flying, your grass must be pretty dang flat with no groundhogs around to run at those speeds.

I top out at 15mph downhill with no load & a tailwind on my L4060. Even if my ground was dead flat (not even close) I couldn't hit 10 powering anything.

I do mow up-hill much slower (~5MPH?),, but, that is only because it feels right.
I have tried it,, the tractor will easily go 8-9MPH,, up-hill.
Down hill,, I can not resist, I let it go.
I am amazed how nice the Woods mower cuts at that speed.
None of my other mowers can cut going that fast.
The JD has way more power than anything else I mow with,,,

I do have one ground hog hole,, I have been meaning to fill that in.
I am going REAL slow when I pass over that,,,

I have yet to mow any of my 3 acres with my tractor lol, but if I did, I would rather cut wide and slow like 3-4mph on a 8ft+ cutter.

That's my theory anyway, my tractor will run over 16mph but I would never try to mow at those speeds in high range, I just feel it would beat up on the tractor too much. But your tractor is a open station with no loader, that might make a big difference. Idk

That's what I been preaching every time someone says to go with a 5' mower (brushhog) on a 30 something hp tractor. Claiming that not enough power to run a 6'+ cutter.

I run an 8' with my 42 PTO hp mx. Wide and slow is a better ride than narrow and fast.

8' cutter at 4 mph cuts just as fast as a 4' cutter at 8mph. But (for the safety police) 8mph is more likely to bounce you off the tractor and run you over:laughing:

I'd be running a 10' or 12' if not for the need to trailer. Kinda need to keep it under 102" wide
