Got one of the seals in today. Got it from John Deere as one of their models contained this very seal. There are springs within the seal to hold it in place.
Okay, the wrong part came in but I managed to fix the cap so I got to put the transfer case back together. Put in the new seal, put the case back onto the axle, bolted it up, and added a bunch of oil. Then got the steering back on it, put the tire on, and tried it out. No leak! I did test out that rototiller, got WD40 on it and engaged my PTO. It did not engage the ground but it didnt have any problem working. The tiller tines turned perfectly, i just need to replace all the seals on it and repaint it. Im pretty happy with that tiller so far. Anyway, I tested the tiller, then drove my tractor down the road to my grandparents house. With those front tires reversed, It definatly feels more stable. Tomarrow, my grandpa may wire up that light on the back of my tractor so I can see better when working in the dark (moving snow) so i can see my rear blade.
From what I have read, you really should not run the front tires reversed. First, it puts added strain on the bearings and hard-to-find (expensive) parts in the front drive hubs. Second, by moving the ground contact point outward you increase the steering difficulty (instead of pivoting on a single point of ground the tire must swing around in an arc.) And you give the ruts more leverage for some thumb-breaking wheel jerks. Third, the increased stability is only realized after the normal pivot action of the front axle hits the stop, which generally is beyond the comfort zone of safe tractoring.
G'day glad to see everything coming back together good for you as for the front tyres we reverse them on all the tractors we sell especially if they are doing a bit of road work as we find that we get anything up to double the tyre life out of them and still get good assistance from them have not had any failures with f/end components that we could put down to the tyrs most of the time it is a lack of maintenance . Keep up the good work
Hey, thanks for the responses. I will probably Put the front tires back inward but for not, I have the tractor on smooth pavement and doing light road grading. After reading how it may break (expensive) parts, I now plan to put the wheels back to the in position. I did however get that front grill installed yesterday. Also got the back light hooked up for night work.
