hi folks..gravelman from NH I have a 48" rotary cutter... 2 acres of field..pretty smooth, few rocks. dont like the looks of the rotary cutter cut...even with sharp blades i still have standing grass here and there...and im not going too fast. Im thinking of finish mower or maybe flail, i see the state using flail and it is a nice clean even cut. any suggestions out there, brands etc. thanks

You should take a few days and read through "Let's Talk Flail Mowers". You'll learn most of what you need to know in several hours or days depending on how fast you read. That's what I did. I'm still following it daily.

Flails are the way to go. And yes, that thread is very long. B.

With mine it is a much better cut and a LOT safer (my dogs love to follow me around). I do have a brush hog, and it just sits now.

I will be getting a tractor AND a flail by the end of the year. I like flails as you have an assortment of blade options. You can run knives and mix that with hammers or chipper blades at the same time. So if you have heavy vines or small limbs to mulch you can do both at the same time. Flail's eat rocks like popcorn in a scary movie theater. Flails are much better and chewing up what the eat. Rotary mowers have a tendency to lay grass over instead of cutting it, especially in the thick stuff. Plus, flails don't hang off the back of your rig unlike rotary mowers do. And you have to take into account the amount of swing behind your rear axle center line. With a rotary mower you could have 7' or 8' hanging off of your three point. Not nearly so with a flail. B.

Just to clarify, you cannot mix knife types on a flail mower rotor, any flail mower, that is not correct in any way. Flail mowers do not eat rocks like popcorn.
You can use only one type of side slicer or scoop knife or if you have a vineyard and orchard flail shredder you can mow grass or shred up vine cuttings or pruned limbs on fruit trees as they use cast flail hammer knives. The Chinese flail mowers use forged and heat treated hammer knives that are smaller and thinner using cast gussets into their design..
Please read the flail mower thread or contact myself or island tractor if you have questions but as I said the flail mower thread is your friend.
