John, I've seen the stuff used that you're talking about, and it is a little better than just grease, but like you said, either one is sure messy. Sometimes may be necessary, but you sure hate to use it if you have an alternative.

The portable air tanks will inflate a tire to one half the air pressure in the air tank. If your tank is safely rated to 100 #s of compressed air, then 50 pounds can be transferred into the object of your desire. Of course the remaining fifty pounds is available for smaller jobs or blowing the dust off of your favorite ???.

Scruffy, that depends on the volume of air in the tank, and the volume of air the tire will hold. There's no way 100# of air in my 7 gallon tank will put 50# in a big truck tire, for example.

The guy who fixes my truck tires uses a bead sealing device called a "Chetah" It basically is a five gallon air tank with a large pipe attached (maybe 1 1/2?) with a large ball valve and a strange looking nozzle at the end. He airs up the tank, then holds it so the nozzle points between the rim and the bead, slams the valve open and zingo the bead is sealed. I have never seen one of these before, but it works.

ErnieB, that's one I never heard of, but sounds like a high volume sudden blast of air, and sure makes sense. If you happen to find out who makes it, whether they have a web site, etc., I'd sure like to know.

Thanks, Derek (and ErnieB). That's a good idea I hadn't seen or heard of before. Of course, the price tag told me I don't need one right now./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

One might be able to build something like it. Looks like a larger portable air tank with a large nozzle (fittings) and a ball valve. Sometimes I just don't understand were they make up there prices. But I'm sure they got there reasons!

Derek, Thats exactly what it looks like, Darned if I know how they came up with that price. The next time I see my tire man, I'm going to ask him about it. Is there something in it made of gold, or what?

I have seen them used and they do work. They are a gotta have thing for tire dealers that service big trucks.
