The rear finish mower I’ve been using finally died (extensive deck rot) so I’ve been on the hunt for a replacement and started to look at flex wing style finish mowers. Anyone using them or care to share your experience? Some of them have ridiculously low hp requirements, almost too good to be true. I’ll be pulling it with a 4720 Deere so I’ve got a little over 50 pto hp. How is the cut quality? Any compromises other than how big and bulky they are? Thanks!

I had a 15 or 16 foot Alamo, gearbox driven. For whatever reason, you can get them quite cheap used. Be careful, the main gearbox on my Alamo had a replacement cost of $6000 already ten years ago. I never needed one.

I would go hydraulic so you can operate the decks independently for narrow locations.

I would (ONLY) go with a model that had LARGE castor wheels, like the bushhog.

The sound these high lift mowers make is awesome and leaving a cut width behind you like that will make you smile. :)

Life is too short to cut grass a few feet at a pass!

I too am looking into purchasing one for a JD 4720. The one I am looking at is a good quality brand -- Bush Hog 11 footer, was run by a 51 HP (less PTO HP) Kubota to mow the ruff of a golf coarse so I know the 4720 will have no problem. I'm sure it has plenty of hrs on it but still looks good ( at least the paint and wheels do) I havent seen it operating just sitting in the grass it has been in for at least a year. They now use a dedicated ruff mower. They haven't given me a price yet. Anyone have an idea of its worth, I myself have no idea of their USED value. A new one is very expensive and way out of my affordability. I have talked to dealers that tell me the manufactures put a requirement of at least 30HP for a 7' finish mower. Good luck with your hunting for one.

What is your budget? Are you looking for new or used? There are a lot of flex wing flail mowers on the market.

Towed reel mower arrays come up for sale with large mower sales companies like moffet turf equipment.

Peruzzo and others make towed folding flail mowers for turf and brush mowing.

I got one!!

Picked up a used land pride and ran it for the first time this evening. So far so good, I’ll update when I get a chance to run it more this week.

I've been using a Lastec 621 ER for about 15 years now. Very good quality machine with excellent customer service. It's used behind a 35 PTO HP Kubota and works great. The thing I like about the Lastec is that it attaches to the 3 point hitch so I can offset it to one side for mowing around the ponds and creek bank. I don't think you can do that with the pull-behind mowers. I love it and would recommend it to anyone who wants a high quality mower.
