Floor Refinishing

Gomez,

Check out the July 2001 issue of Fine Homebuilding. They have a website which I think is http:// www.finehomebuilding.com .

The issue has a review of a wood floor oribital sander in the back of the magazine. The review talks about many of the problems that others have mentioned. The new oribital sander is supposed to prevent much of the problems in using the other sanders.

Hope this helps...

I usually do most of my own woodwork, plumbing, electrical, rough carpentry, lawn maintenance, etc. around the house - I've even installed some nice quarter-sawn red oak floors in my library and dining room. However, there are two things I won't do. One is finish drywall, and the other is sand wood floors. I can do everything else to the wife's specs (and my own), but the learning curve is pretty steep for both these tasks. I tend to overbuild and do things too perfect within the infrastructure, but the final touches are too permanant for me to be experimenting and learning on. All I need is for her to see divots in the floor or wavy drywall whenever that afternoon sun streams in the west windows. Every time I would walk into the room I'd be reminded about it. $1 a foot seems like a bargain.

60 should do the trick, cuts plenty fast enough for most folks. I've seen some floors folks have done that looked beautiful. But I've also seen a lot of butchered up jobs where somebody had the bright idea of a hand held belt sander. When you walk into a 100k or 200k Victorian and the floors are all gouged up...

I have to agree with DocHeb on the drywall and floor finishing. I also have a few other items to add for my personal list. I can install sinks, faucets, drain lines, etc., but not the water heater. I can wire the entire house, run every inch of it, install outlets, switches and lights, but I can't hook the wire to the breaker and snap it into the box. Otherwise I run the risk of: "I TOLD you not to do that! I told you..." /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Some stuff is better left to the pros.
