Fluid in tires

When I bought my tractor a couple of years ago, I told them that I wanted loaded tires. They took my tractor to a local tire shop and they put in a mixture of water and methanol. Do any of my fellow TBNers have that in their tires? I'd be interested to know if anyone knows how it performs over time. I've had no problems with thus far.

I present no comment, recommendations or opinions, just my experience.

Back in 1987 I bought a new Cub Cadet 1810 hydro garden tractor. I asked the dealer the cost of wheel weights $100. The cost of Cal Clor fill $100. The cost of new wheels $100. I figured I could fill the tires myself with water and let the rims rust through and spend the $100 later. I filled the tires myself with water. Water freezes solid during the Vermont winter but then again I do not mow the lawn then. I did move the tractor once during the winter with frozen tires. What a jerky ride.
I still use this tractor and since 1987 I have had no wheel problems and never a flat.

Six pages on loaded tires and not a single mention of foam? I realize that foam is not "fluid", but it is heavier than Rim Gaurd for calc. and it won't leak ever.

Well..... the foam is a liquid when it's pumped into the tires. :laughing::laughing::laughing:

I filled my fronts with "foam". I am not sure why it is called foam because it appears more like a silicon rubbery substance when cured. It is very heavy unlike foam. My rears are filled with windshield washer fluid I purchased from a local jobber in a 55 gallon barrel for less than a dollar per gallon.

As far as the disputes on this thread, one must ask, why use a highly poisonous product when other options are available for the very same price? Flat tires are very common. I personally have lost a cat to antifreeze. It was an ugly death to top it off. His eyes were rolling back and it survived close to a day before it finally died. Our vet said it only takes drops from him licking his paw.

I am not a die hard cat lover or environmentalist but please be respectful the environment in which we all must thrive.

i'm pretty sure i mentioned it before that PG is available almost 2:1 on the shelf vs EG at least at my local stores. so it for sure is an equal option at near the same price. I'd use that vs ww fluid havn't seen any non toxic AND freeze proof ww fluids.. ie.. no methanol.

You are correct, windshield fluid is also toxic. I consider it to be a lesser evil because I was told that the methanol would evaporate rather quickly. Can't back that up though.

how fast does it evporate from the plastic container next to your hot engine?

If you are the least worried about toxicity.. stick with cacl, beet juice or PG anti freeze compounds.. Even in temperate climates I'd add SOME PG af to my tires if not tubed, to add corrosion resistance.. etc.. I'm sure the valve stem appreciates it too..

I guess I don't understand your question. My rubbing alcohol does not evaporate from it's plastic bottle either. I put it on a cotton ball and it is gone. I will explain it if that is what you are requesting.

Most WW tanks dont have lids that are even close to air tight either.

WW Fluid is water and methanol mixed + soap. Methanol is miscibile in water so the properties of the alcohol solution are altered so the methanol doesn't evaporate very readily. They are actually bound to the polar water molecules.

cost and availability I guess.

a good set of hd pie weights for my tractor types will cost near 1000$ per machine.

water is more or less free.. plus the ballast or freeze protection.

not a hard call!

I have RV antifreeze in one tractor and Rimguard "beet juice" in another. I definitely prefer the Rimguard. There is about a 38% difference in weight. i.e. RV antifreeze is only 7.2 lbs per gal and Rimguard is 11.6 lbs per gal.

I installed the RV antifreeze myself, and it was a pain in the but. I called the local Rimguard dealer and they sent a truck out and had them filled in about 30 min. There was only about $.50-$1.00/gal difference. Next chance I get, I'm getting rid of the RV.BTW I have never had either freeze up down to -15 deg F:thumbsup:

I've heard vitamin K will counter act the poisonous effects of anti-freeze.

and not drinking the stuff prevents it totally! IE.. don't leave it puddled... dispose of it properly.
