Fluorescent bulb life

i changed every bulb in the house thats not on a dimmer, to the compac flourescent, several years ago: so far i have had to replace 2 of them, their 5 year warranty would cost more to have them replaced than to buy new ones..so far i like them, they come on fast and make plenty of light and no heat.

I have two compact ones on outdoor lights. I replaced the incandescents because I was tired of changing bulbs so often. Those two CFs have been in there for years and never burned out. I have one 'circline' in a back hallway. Very annoying as it is very slow to light and it does burn out every year or two. Have one CF in a floor lamp - never been changfed. I put that one in as I was tired of the heat the incandescents produce and also replacing bulbs so often.

As other incandescents fail, they will be replaced with CFs

I am a bit of an efficiency geek. I went around and changed all of our incandescnet bulbs to CFs. 7 year life my a$$. Oddly, some last way longer than others and life isn't tied to hours of use or on/off cycles or wet environment. The longest lasting ones seem to be mounted with curls pointing down so upside down of a normal lamp.

I am using the old incondescents in my droplight in the garage. As the name implies it gets dropped a lot and the bulbs pop so a sack of extras works fine.

My 4' flourescent shop lights are all the cheap hardwired type with the cheapest 40 watt bulbs I could find. I've got 4 fixtres in the attached garage and one in the outside garden shed. The cold really does a number on the shed fixture where they won't fire but on warmer days they work like new.

I have the 24" 20W version in all of our closets, I haven't changed a bulb in 10 years, but I've replaced a lot of starters.

the only way i came up with to keep regular bulbs from burning out so often, was to buy bulbs that stated they were for 130V....a little higher in cost, but they don't burn out anywhere near as often..but i like the cf even better, especially since the price is really coming down.
