Words don't do this justice! The guy wanted to listen to his turbo while going through the tunnel. I read somewhere that a bystander waved at him to slow down right at the tunnel exit, but it was too late (you can't see this because of the glare). I guess he's never heard of counter steering....

Pays to know the road your speeding on.
Was nice scenery except for the bumpy part.

He didnt go that fast either. In winter i allways use the parking brake for steering. I'd rather oversteer than understeer, with understeer you cant do much on ice.

Bet he wished he didn't have that dash cam going. Insurance company and cops probably really enjoyed watching that one. That is one lucky dude. He could have gone soooo much farther down that hill.

Doesn't matter how you are steering if your brakes are locked. The video shows three and four skid marks leading to the edge.

The car looks like it could be driven away.

That car is new enough that it should have had anti-lock brakes, so unless something failed, the tires shouldn't have locked up.

There is another possibility. If the wheels were turned to the left (which is likely based upon how the car moved) there would have been skid marks left from the tires scrubbing sideways. If you look at the skid mark caused by the left front tire, it's very narrow and the mark from the right front is very heavy. That would be consistent with the wheel turned to the left and more weight on the right front. There doesn't appear to be any fourth skid mark of note from the left rear tire...it would have had the least weight on it in that situation, so the least traction.

Regardless of whether the brakes were locked up, or he didn't counter-steer, it's a total fail as far as driving skills go.

If he drove it away I suspect it wouldn't last long...not much chance the radiator survived that impact.

Wow! But it did sound pretty darned good going through the tunnel, maybe he can keep a happy memory of that!

Someone was watching out for him. He could have gone a long way down that mountain. Ed

I'm actually amazed that all he said was "Oh no!" and not something more....colorful :D

That is the difference between 'city' boys and 'country' boys. The city boy says 'oh, no'. The country boy says,'hold my beer and watch this'.

Well he did exactly what you should not do when you lose control .... hit your brakes and skid off a mountain. If he would have counter steered and/or add gas with the direction of the slide he would have been able to get the car back under some degree of control and not crash off the mountain. Again, poor driving experience along with probably not knowing the road or hazards ahead. In the end it can happen to most people, even the pros. The "oh ****" pedal aka the brakes are not meant for slides, unless you want to go into one or i.e. trail braking.

That's the same thing we tell everyone here in Indiana....

.......... and watch a pro at work

Rgds, D.

I could watch Ken Block do his Gymkhana thing all night long. That man can drive like no-one I've ever seen.

As to the the OP, Sad to see a turbo Subie taken out in such a manor.
But... does that earn the Forester a sixth star for its crash test rating?
