Backhoe For real 3 point damage.

Ok. I've heard lots of rumors and have pretty much been on the sub- frame band wagon myself But I have yet to see a 3 point backhoe damage a tractor. I'm not saying it does not happen, just that under normal, heck even rough use (with outriggers) down I don't know of 1 single reliable report. I have seen on this website a frame mount factory backhoe snap a tractor in the middle. If I'm off base feel free to correct me. But I'm just wondering if all the sub-frame hype is all that it has been built up to be. Especially on today's modern tractors.

I can't speak to tractors breaking in half, but I'm not sure I would call it "sub-frame hype", its engineering and physics and distribution of forces. My dealer sells two brands of tractor and will not sell a hoe unless it's sub-frame. I'm sure there are thousands of 3 point hoes out there with no issues but if those outriggers start digging in and lose footing , the forces on the 3 point are insane. Even with solid footing the force on the top link has got to be well over design .

As far as real life advantage, this is my second NH with a Bradco on a subframe and I won't hesitate to swing around and do quick light hoe work (pop a small stump, move a rock) without even dropping the outriggers and move on. Easy on and off too, and it doesn't interfere with my three point links.

As far as today's modern tractors, maybe less iron now than older stuff.

Kubota L4850

I had cracks to develop in the shuttle shift housing on this tractor. I notified Kubota and the southeastern district representative did come to my farm. The line of BS that he gave me would fill a tandem dump truck to overflowing! He said, and I quote," the reason the part failed was because I had attached an aftermarket, three point hitch backhoe (Bush Hog Brand) to the machine. If I had used a Kubota brand, it would not have happened because the Kubota brand has a sub-frame with it."
I have a front-end loader on this tractor which already has a sub-frame to the rear axles. I don't know where this fool thinks another "subframe" would attach. Incidentally, the shuttle shift housing costs almost $2000.00 plus tax, plus freight. Kubota left me "high and dry" so now I tell everyone that I know that is even thinking of buying a tractor my story and suggest buying a mule instead. At least you know what kind of manure you are going to get.

When I bought my tractor I was told usage of three point BH will void warranty. The top link anchor point is not designed to take the force that could be generated by the BH. The dealer told me that it will rip the bolts out of the housing. I looked on the subframe for BH while ago. It is bolted together with the FEL subframe.

I have a 3 point mounted backhoe and Fordson Major with sub frame and a large backhoe. The first that will break is the top link / top link bracket or mounts to the lower arms. And you are going to be mean to backhoe before it happens. Main advantage of the sub frame is that you get less movement between the tractor and back hoe

well i am thoroughly convinced now. i thought it was better but just did not think that it was that big of a deal. i can see where it would prevent excess movement also. i hear people say 3 point is ok if you are easy with it but i know that even if i plan to there is always going to be that time( probably most times) that a root or rock or something is being stubborn an u push it to far. the cost of the sub frame is not really the issue its the cost of the backhoes that offer subframes. which happens to be the ones that i think are of better quality. i guess that should have been enough right there but my cheapness combined with my unwilling to accept the obvious if it can save me money gets the best of me. thanks for the wake up its what i needed.

This was a great discussion 09/2005 under "Owning Operating" forum. I have pics of my bracket and part number for my L 3400.
