IMO, 'socking away' is HUGE! So many friends ~half my age envy my free time, but what's not obvious to them is the typical 50% reduction in income. In general and
not to direct this to anyone in particular, just having your house/spread paid for is not the key to comfortable living in retirement! You'd still have
all the other expenses, and inflation to complicate the matter.
What I learned from 'max'-ing my sock-aways the last several years I worked was a return to living economically as in my early years. When going on pension and SS the transition was less dramatic since my period of heavy contributing was over. 'Be pepared' isn't just for Boy Scouts.
