SCHOOL STARTED TODAY!!! Why is that important to a retiree? We're raising a grandson (7th grade) and when he's out for the summer - the wife is at work - I'm home with him ....BUT now for another school season I get to have the place all to myself again during the day. I don't have to be concerned with feeding or watching another human being all day. I can get into projects and not worry about fixing lunch or any other needs he may have....the day is MINE. WHOOP!

Guess I'd say that staying out of an assisted living place and having good health and generally doing whatever I feel like is it. Seldom see the four kids or thirteen grandkids except when I throw a big bonfire/party in the fall. Without the wife of 50 years, it does get boring/lonely however.
Cheers,
Mike

Hey, when you are over 80, short, bald, wrinkled, without money, you don't get many positive responses which is understandable. But I did have enough money to buy a new Kubota and attachments. Now if that thing could just make some good meatloaf.:D

I am so envious of those of you who have been able to retire. I am 53, have been practicing law with a big firm for the last 18 of the 28 years I have been practicing. I hate my job so bad it hurts. I die a little more each day I do it.

I was well on the way to socking away enough money to get out of this job but then my effective tax rate went up to 49% between the expiration of the Bush tax cuts and the added Obamacare FICA/Medicare tax increases. So my plans have been derailed a bit. I cannot wait for the day I can decide what I want to do during the day and when I want to do it.

I feel your pain! I have come to hate my job in the last few years. I have a new boss who has ZERO people skills, he won't even acknowledge me when we pass in the hall let alone drop by my cubicle to say Hi. I can't wait to get out of here. Hopefully, I can hang on for a year or two. BTW, my sister lives in Waxahachie and loves it. I'm going out there for a quick visit in October.

Yep, Vulcan, working with jerks definitely makes things harder. Of course, I work with attorneys, so it's a given.

I hope you enjoy your visit to Waxahachie. It's a great little town. The weather should be getting nice by the time you come.

My son is an attorney.... I'm waiting for the day that he sues me for being a rotten father.

I like taking a one hour nap most afternoons during the summer, with my favorite cat for company.

I guess times have changed and I am not that old.

Back in the day... we graduated High School and made our way to College if so inclined and most had little to no support in doing so.

Most everyone I know was working their way through school, some had GI Bill and there were a couple with scholarships and a few where parents/grandparents wrote the checks.

Same for cars... we bought wheels and worked on keeping them on the road.

I work at a Hospital in California and I would say all parents I work with buy their kids cars and the majority buy new cars... like Honda Civic.

The majority also take out home equity loans to send their kids to college and the kids don't work... they want them to enjoy their college years.

Is America a rich country or what?
