Ford 1500/1700 injector pump

john,

I have not been able to see any write up on the injector pump, their specs, flow rate, pressure and even how to tweak and adjust. for mine all factory adjustment are locked in with wire and no one taken them off or adjusted them. The adjustment and injector limning will be crucial.

Now if my injector pump died , it was beyond repair and had an opportunity for a cheap close enough replacement then I would not hesitate to do some trial and error to see if I can get it to work.

At this point I would ask all the actual 1500 owners here to chime in and provide information at least on the model # on their rig. John, can you take soem good picture of your 1500 injector pump so we can compare and contrast with 1700... I don't know how close they will be. might worth a try.

JC,

Thanks for the response. I don't have a decent picture of the pump but I looked at the 1700 pumps shown earlier in this thread and they are visually identical to the pump that was on my tractor. The pump from my tractor has number 4302-657 on the top of the tag. The salvage yard sent me a picture of their pump and it's number is 4302-419. It's still on an engine that appears to be laying on it's side in the yard. It looks like it's been sitting outside for quite a while. The bolts and the steel cover next to the tag are quite rusty. I know that tractors tend to have a hard life and often sit outside for years and still work fine, so this may not be a problem. But who knows?

It appears that the "4302" part of the ID number is standard for all the pumps that go on this engine. I don't know what the last 3 numbers signify. Maybe it's the production run for the pump or something else. It would be helpful to know what the ID numbers are for other pumps that are on 1500 engines. Maybe the last 3 numbers vary quite a bit, maybe not. If others have the same ID number as the used pump, or the last 3 numbers from various 1500 pumps vary all over the place, I'll feel more confident about buying the used pump.

A complete "good as new" rebuild on my pump with a guarantee is about $1100. A less comprehensive rebuild that would probably work okay would be about $800. It's a hassle to remove and replace the pump and it would not be a lot of fun to install the used pump and find out that it doesn't work quite as well as it should. I could have the local rebuilder look at the used pump and do whatever needs to be done. I'm leaning towards having the old pump rebuilt like new and call it a day. I'll see what the salvage yard wants for their pump and make a decision. Additional information on ID tag numbers from other 1500 owners would help me make this decision.

I appreciate the help from this forum!

Just talked to the manager at the salvage yard. He said that it has been sitting for 10 months and the engine ran but had low compression (130 PSI) so they couldn't resell it as a complete unit. Their price for the pump is $250 with a 1 year guarantee. I thought about it for a couple seconds and told them to send it to me. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

That's a good price. Do make sure you have oil in it prior to any installation. Don't tweak any of setting and put witness mark for where settings are for now.
It appears that they are identical from pictures I have seen. I did not ever time my injector but there is an instruction for it. Let me know if you need it. the only tweaking you want to do is injector timing which is external to the injector. Look to see if the old injector have some witness mark against the timing cover, use that to get started if any. Mark if you can where the old injector is in comparison to the back of timing cover and start from there. Mark throttle arm locarion and try to duplicate than on the new(old) injector that you are buying.

JC,

ps. keep us posted with your progress with picture. We'll add that to our repair data base.

JC,

I have the I&T Ford Shop Manual 1100 through 2110 tractors and it has some instructions on how to time the pump. I read through it briefly a couple days ago and it seemed to make sense. I'll read it a few more times before I actually do it. I like your idea of transferring the witness mark from the old pump to the "new" one and begin the timing process by lining it up with the mark on the timing cover. Thanks for suggesting it.

Here are the numbers from my 1980 1500 pump. Hope you can decipher them:

no go on decipher  it's all Greek to me. Only understand gov adjustment, but how to do it.. I don't know. Never seen any write up on the pump other than one isometric drawing of the components. All I have done to mine is throttle adjustment as mine idled a bit high and I lowered it by 100 rpm.

Those are exactly the same numbers that are on the original fuel injection pump that was on my tractor. The used pump that should arrive in a few days has the following numbers, listed in order from top to bottom.

4302-419
1PF035942
S2K70C210S2N2
400-1250 RPM

I'd be happier if it had the same numbers as the pumps on both our tractors, but beggars can't be choosers.

I stopped by the local New Holland dealer to pick up some parts that I had ordered. While I was there I asked the guys in the parts department if they knew what the numbers meant and they had no idea. They don't work on mechanical fuel injection pumps and send any pumps that need to be repaired to the rebuilder I had taken my fuel injection pump to. I had called them a couple days earlier and asked if they know what the numbers meant and was told that the 4302 number indicated that the pump was for my tractor but they didn't know what the -419 number meant.

I may have to find a specialist in Egyptian hieroglyphics to decipher what the numbers mean.

Thanks for posting the numbers on your fuel injection pump. Maybe this discussion will help someone else someday.

John,

I'm a very inquisitive person by nature. I did do some research on the pump and my head started spinning. I was even found our in line pump model but the site was not forthcoming on any info. It is like their keeping a secret or something. All is classified when it comes to these pumps:confused3:

By the way, male sure to do a reversible postmortem autopsy on your pump and take some detailed picture. That will be good information. Like i said that injector is like a little engine where input shaft driven off of cam, crankshaft gear. That in turn rotates a camshaft with the lobes that drives a plunger up a and down and with intake and exhaust valve pump fuel out. it is about the same as a power washer machine.
