Ford 1700 overheating and building pressure in radiator

. I think you might have a a bad thermostat and the wrong cap (becaue of the bolt and clamp set up).

Neither of these would cause excessive pressure build up while cranking and would not prevent starting. I would put a pressure tester on the cooling system and see how high the pressure is building. Don't let it exceed 15psi.

I have a 1700 and never had overheating problem, mine is hard starting (2700 hours), need glow plugs even in summer, but runs strong.

My first thought, I would think there's blockage as mentioned maybe thermostat.

It would be pretty rotten if someone hid a cracked head from you.

JB.

Well guys....the guy was rotten! I took the day off to work on it. We started off by removing the radiator cap and turned the motor over using the starter, antifreeze shot out like a guizer...so we wondered if the water pump might be having issues, we removed the alternator belt(water pump belt) and tried it again. Same thing....we decided to remove the head(took about 20 min). The head gasket was blown in 2 spots....it looks like it had been like that for awhile and I will be having a discussion with the "seller". Now, can someone direct me to a site that sells my kind of head gasket? I have been on here for hours and no luck. Again I appreciate everyones help...this is a great website with good people. P.S. Sorry for the duplicate post soundguy, I am still new to the site, I wasn't sure if I had posted in the correct catagory...won't happen again ;-)

If it's just the gasket and it was that easy to get to, I wouldn't be to upset.

It may even of blown on your time.

Not sure about where to get the gasket, New Holland dealer can't get them anymore? It is a Shibaura engine, it should be available somewhere.

If you can't find one, try asking in TBN's Ford/ New Holland forum.

Good Luck, JB.

Thanks JB...we only had 1 1/2 hours on it, now that I have calmed down, it isn't as bad as I expected...I found one on the internet for $185.00 ...I am going to call the New Holland dealer tomorrow...Thx again ;-)

Even 1.5 hours, anything is possible, Maybe if the guy is decent he will help with the cost of the gasket?
Seems high to me But I have never priced one, maybe ask in the Ford section. There's a couple guys in there with 1700's that know them inside and out.

Is yours 4X4, loader?

Yes it is 4x4 with a loader...I went down today to clean the gasket material off and I found 3 cracks going from the valve seat all the way out to the edge of the combustion area. I finally called the guy, he said that he would try to help us find a replacement head. I don't know if that means he is going to help with the price or not but, I can only hope....state law is "buyer beware". So I will just have to wait and see how it plays out. The amount of build up around the blown head gasket (according to the local machine shop) appears to have been like that for awhile and the fact that it cracked the head in 3 spots shows alot of heat over a long period of time. I will let ya know what happens...gonna go shopping for a new head now...thx again
