A simple test for head gasket or cracked head is to remove the radiator overflow tubing from the fill neck. Replace it with a long piece of rubber or plastic tubing such that the open end can be placed into a bucket of water. Crank the engine with the radiator cap installed and run the engine until it is warm. If you are able to apply a load to warm the engine to operating temperature, so much the better. What you are looking for is a steady stream of bubbles from the hose in the bucket of water. That would be compression pressure and combustion gases entering the cooling system. If it has an initial bubbling but does not continue, that is due to coolant expansion, nothing more. A thermostat has nothing to do with this issue as the air entering the system can push through from the lower radiator hose.
