Ford 1700 overheating and building pressure in radiator

A simple test for head gasket or cracked head is to remove the radiator overflow tubing from the fill neck. Replace it with a long piece of rubber or plastic tubing such that the open end can be placed into a bucket of water. Crank the engine with the radiator cap installed and run the engine until it is warm. If you are able to apply a load to warm the engine to operating temperature, so much the better. What you are looking for is a steady stream of bubbles from the hose in the bucket of water. That would be compression pressure and combustion gases entering the cooling system. If it has an initial bubbling but does not continue, that is due to coolant expansion, nothing more. A thermostat has nothing to do with this issue as the air entering the system can push through from the lower radiator hose.

Thanks Gary....I appreciate the input...We have decided to have the cracks repaired as apposed to buying a new head.(for now) A new head (bare) is $2300 for a 2 cylinder shibaura deisel. The machine shop said that he is pretty confidant that he can repair the damage. Keep your fingers crossed for me ;-)

But a used one off a parts tractor should be at least 1/4 of that i would think.

Good luck, do those cracks go all the way through? How much will it cost to repair?

I just wanted to give an update....we just went and picked up the repaired head. The guy that repaired it said that he was able to repair it, and it pressure tested to 400 psi...he said that the repair went so well that he would stand behind it. I called the guy who sold us the tractor, he said that he was as shocked as we were that something had happened. He said that he would pay for the repairs and appologized for the inconvinence. We will be re-installing everything this coming weekend. Could anyone tell me the valve clearance and since the injector pump wasn't removed...will we have to prime the injector's?

BTW...the repair costs so far are...head gasket and hour meter cable =$120.00...head repair and complete valve job = $404.29....the fact that the seller is paying for repairs...priceless!

Glad to hear it's working out well, you should ask that valve clearance question in the new holland section.

Sounds like you got it from a stand up guy. Who may just have no idea about equiptment or how it should sound run? I hope he comes through with the cash when approached with the bill.
