3 cyl machines DO NOT use gear oil in the rear sump. They use a UTF meeting the M2C134 spec inthe rear sump since they share hyds in that sump... and yes.. that would very likely be the problem... the heavy oil will make the pump cavitate, wear, and self destruct eventually...

M2c41 was likely the original oil spec...

first things first he needs to fix the leak at the hyd. pump because if its leaking it could most likely be bleeding off and thats why it takes it so long to lift when he first starts the tractor

yep.. not to mention that if theire is an air leak.. he could be getting air entrainment.. and thus cavitation... a further problem for that poor pump...

IMHO.. leaks should be an obviouse 'fix it now or pay alot later' type issue.. :)

yep it just like the other thread about the 8n that wont rev. if you dont do the little things first you will just be chasing the problem from one part to the next. So its best to do the little things first and go from there

Brought my OEM OP manual in from the shop for the 2000. Oil for the hydrauilcs, per the book is ESN-M2C77-A or, M-4864-A. Did a little searching, and comes back to a SAE 80 mineral gear oil. Did some number crossings, and searches, and came up with a NAPA #, and entered it. Came up 80/90 gear oil.

Read more than several threads from various forums discussing using original spec oil, and the "134" oil. Other than faster response time in cold weather, and seepage using the thinner oil, there didn't seem to be anyone having more than those problems.

So if Bobby R is not the original owner, and the PO went by the book, could very well be SAE 80 gear oil in the hydraulics.

or you sure you have the oem manual or a reprint i have the OE factory dealer Oil capacitites and spec. Book since my father was a ford dealer and it states that the post 64 2000 uses 25.2Qt's of 134d spec oil in the rear axle/hydraulics and 13.2Qt's of 134d spec oil in the trans mission

i agree..

and I'd never use a 60 year old spec that has been superceeded with a modern one.. like the 134.. etc.

The pre 65 2000 for sure used the 80ep oil in the diffy...

i've seen plenty of reprint manuals with errors..

I have been putting hydraulic oil in, not gear oil. You're right Whodat, I need to fix the leak and go from there. That could be it, and if not, then I'll check the filters. Thanks to all of you for your help.

and you can clean the filter most time just by draining the oil and dumping in about 5 gallons of diesel and a bottle of achol and drive it around for a few minutes then drain while hot. I would try that before going into the lift top because depending on the trans is if you have to remove the pto shaft, left floor board, and pto selector or if you have to split the tractor between the rear end and trans to remove the filter.

hope your rear end ain't toast by now.. hyd oil is not ep rated and has no lube for them final drive gears. you need a utf type oil....

Yep, both OEM. Service manual is a NOS. Date of print, 1966. To double check, I looked in the Service manual under Rear Axle and Brakes section, and calls for the same specs. SAE 80 EP. Strange thing, below that is gives the General Specification of 20W30.

I'm not arguing about using the 134 oil, I do myself. That's what the dealer gave me, and said that is what they are using now, so went with that.

It may be due to using the piston pump on these tractors, instead of a gear type. I dunno'...
