Tractor
Ford 3000
I have a ford 3000 gas with the 8 speed manual transmission. In the fall I parked the tractor and didn’t notice any issues. This spring as I went to start the tractor it will only start with the clutch pushed in. When I release the clutch it bogs and dies. The rear wheels are both free spinning, I have jacked the rear up and attempted to start and shift with no pressure to no avail. From the limited sources I have found the problem sounds like it could be being stuck in 2 gears. Is there a best way to remedy this issue? Any pictures or videos or links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ed, I did search for this prior to my inquiry. I have watched the videos and I believe I did the simple rail alignment as shown without any success in getting my tractor moving. The tractor was working well when parked. It rolls as if it is in neutral when the engine is off but as soon as the engine is running and the clutch is released it bogs and dies

Let me see if I understand this correctly... with the tractor on the ground and in neutral you can push around, move it forward and back? And the engine will run as long as you hold the clutch down but can you turn it over or start it if the clutch is left up?

My guess is that you will not be able to turn it over if the clutch is not depressed. If I am right and you can move the tractor and it will not turn over if the clutch is not depressed then your main input shaft is locked up, most likely the bearing on the input shaft has failed and the only way to know for sure is to split the tractor.

If the transmission were stuck in two gears you would not be able to push the tractor around yet the rear wheels would still turn if the tractor is jacked up. With both wheels in the air one, turning one will turn the other in reverse direction. You will not be able to turn both in the same direction at the same time IF it is locked in two gears.

Thanks for the reply John. Unfortunately I think you are correct and the input shaft is locked up. This is the answer I wanted to hear but the solution I was hoping to avoid. I am curious if the fluid could be so compromised that the cold temperatures here in Michigan have the transmission frozen and a thaw could potentially get me moving again? This is wishful thinking at its finest

If you have enough water in the transmission it could seperate and freeze locking up the transmission.

Since you in effect have a 2 speed transmission and a 4 speed transmission one of them could be locked and other would still allow tractor to move in neutral.

My shifter was broken. Stuck in Reverse. Found that out the hard way. The shop that replaced the 2 stage clutch on a 63-2000 had trouble and had to welded on it. Twice!! Been working ASIS for a couple Yrs.. The clutch was actually stuck and the shop showed it to me, They pry bared it to try and unstick it. though the starter mounting hole.

Circling back, with warmer air temperatures now the transmission has unfroze. I’ll be flushing and changing all fluid in the next couple weeks. Thanks for the replies and input.
