I will give that a shot to try to pinpoint the problem. I will have access to my buddies shop in a week or so, and will have all the tools I need if I have to split it. I just had the pleasure of visiting the local New Holland dealer, where I was told that a replacement clutch kit (assuming its a dual clutch setup) is $1291. Add our sales tax of 13% and I am looking at $1458 to do a clutch. Of course these are Canadian dollars, which is $1129 US. I think I will be checking out aftermarket kits in the US. Its only a 90 minute drive to the border from here.

I went online on the site for Yesterdays Tractors to get an idea on price, only to discover that there are a half dozen different kits listed for the 3000, depending on the splines and disk types. Assuming its the clutch that's the problem, I will have to split the tractor to see what exactly I have to order. The prices are around the $450 mark, and for those savings I will drive the 90 minutes to pick it up!

Spent a few hours yesterday removing the loader (which is in the way of absolutely everything). Started on the split around 10 this morning and by 3 this afternoon we had her in 2 parts and the clutch removed. It turns out that the PTO disk was nothing more than a thin round metal disk without a trace of any of the friction material. No wonder I could spin it by hand when it was supposed to be engaged! Everything else looked good, so now its just a matter of ordering a clutch kit and a quick trip to the border to pick it up. Thanks for all the input guys!

No idea, but we got it at an auction where it was advertised as having a working PTO. The remnants of the PTO clutch inside this thing make it very clear that whoever brought it to the auction knew darn well that it was 100 percent shot, and had been for a while. Oh well, we went from never having owned a tractor to splitting one in half in a couple of weeks, and you sure start to get familiar with stuff when you dive this far into it! While its open and easy to get at we decided to change the rear main seal as well, but things get a little fuzzy here. The Ford factory repair manual refers to 3 different rear main seals (2 are red and one is black), and all 3 have different recommended depths that they should be installed at. The I&T manual only refers to one seal that goes in .060 inch. The existing seal in our tractor is a Ford seal (CSNE-6701-B2 SGA 40943) and is orange in colour and is installed flush. When I get the new seal and the rest of the parts for the clutch job, I sure hope there will be instructions as to depth!

I'd change the input shaft seals as well.

Did the 4 hour round trip to Buffalo yesterday and got the new clutch kit from YT. I opened the box to discover that there was nothing wrapped around the plastic clutch installation tool, which now had numerous teeth mashed flat from being pounded by a 48 pound metal clutch assembly. It took me a good 15 minutes with a sharp knife to carve away the crushed areas so that the tool can fit into the splines properly. I was not impressed. Then I looked at the rear main oil seal that was also sent in the same box, and it too had been crushed and was now garbage. Again-not impressed. The tractor is holding up space in my buddy's shop, so off to the New Holland dealer I went. I got a new seal that set me back $73.74 (this is why Canadians shop in the States). We will try to do the installation this Saturday, and will post any little tricks that we learn that may help others with this chore. Again, thanks for all the help to this point, guys!

Wow, sorry to hear about all that! What a bummer. At least you have what you need now, and you'll get her back together and running this weekend. I feel bad for you Canadians when it comes to purchasing!
