This is the truck i just traded on my new excavator . It had 265hp and 700ftlb of torque . Its loaded to half it gross combination weight of 32 tons in the photo and pulled the load like a train . Look for torque , not horsepower . Egon , I bet yours would pull a boat up a ramp at idle .

Ironhorse----I understand what you are saying but over here we have this "small" industry called the insurance scam!!!! They charge you rates based on the perceived risk. If it is quite and drives like a car they will not charge a high rate. If it runs and drives like a real truck they charge you big truck rates, which is what ever rate they what it to be. Rebuilding the old '92 dodge 4wh banks turbo 26mpg instead of taking a chance on this new government approved no smog making low mpg engines.

I'd be looking for a good clean early Dodge with the Cummins if you want a good truck that will last 20 years .

Curiously enough, I bought a 98.5 24V Dodge Cummins 5 speed this spring, just for that reason. An exhaust and ECM programmer later, ~600 ft lbs torque. I release the clutch in creeper gear 1st, and my 7500lb travel travel just walks out of wherever it might be. I'm never selling this truck.

Now all you guys have to do is convince Cummins to build an all Alloy version with cast iron liners and you would have the perfect engine .

This photo will remove all doubt about what makes torque . Horsepower works on the track , Torque works on the street .

I purchased an 03 F350 dually crew cab 4 years ago with 38K miles on it. Got the last of the 7.3's. I plan on keeping it for 20 years. By that time I'll be 64, the truck will have 300K miles on it, and I can buy me a new wind and solar powered 1000 HP Al Gore Special.

I've had my 98.5 for 5 years now. I have an auto, which I replaced with a full billet built trans. I'm at 500hp/1000lb/ft + at the wheels, and I still get 18 mpg daily driving, and over 20 on highway trips. With a 7500 lb load I can still get 14 mpg.

I'm never selling mine either.

Really? I see you have little grasp of the insurance industry. If what you are saying is true, then why is the insurance on my 2008, King Ranch F350 4x4, crewcab, dually, diesel LESS per year than the 2002 Volvo S-60 I own???

Pretty sure its Peugot

I'm totally sure you have no idea what you're talking about.

I noticed the article said "ford designed" and built in mexico. Any clues whose motor it really is?

Yes, I covered this in a previous post on this site. It is Ford design based on the Range Rover diesel they're currently producing. It was designed at the Ford Dagenham England Diesel Centre of Exellence. It will be produced in the Ford Mexico engine plant as they have capacity there for the motor. The U.S. plants are being converted to produce the EcoBoost engine. The EcoBoost motors are being introduced in limited 2008 models. As production capacity can be ramped up, all cars and light trucks with gasoline motors will use this design.

GM is looking at a joint venture with Ford on the EcoBoost design for GM gas motors, with Ford getting the GM "Volt" technology in return. The last Ford/GM joint venture was for the 6-speed automatic transmission that is in both Ford and GM automobiles.

6 con rods on an I-6 would each naturally be larger than 8 con rods on a V-8, so would the pistons. I don't really get much out of all that hype about bigger con rods. I've seen plenty of windowed Cummins diesels. However, I do like the simplicity of an I-6 over a V-8.

I have no dispute with you about torque being king, but this Duramax V-8 diesel I have makes 650ftlbs of torque at like 1700RPM, just about the same as the newest most powerful stock Cummins.
