Really? I see you have little grasp of the insurance industry. If what you are saying is true, then why is the insurance on my 2008, King Ranch F350 4x4, crewcab, dually, diesel LESS per year than the 2002 Volvo S-60 I own???

Yeah I am kind of wondering the same thing. I noticed that I pay more liability insurance for my 1998 Chevrolet tracker than I do for my 2006 2500Hd crew cab 4 wheel drive truck. I think they rate premiums by several things. NOT neccesarily the horsepower of the engine. Actually one of the key ingredients in your insurance rates is your credit report score.

Let me tell you something, the 5.9L cummins rated "medium duty" also has a greatly reduced power level so it can survive the rigors or medium duty applications. I'd consider the GMC5500 a medium duty truck. It's available with a 6.6L DMAX at 360 or 300HP.
Builder, you are absolutely right, We have 2 late model Gradall G3WD telescopic excavators at work , each with 24 valve 5.9 cummins engines, each has had 2 fuel injection pumps and more pv pumps than I can accurately recall. Each machine weighs apprx 34k work ready, and while the 5.9 will move it down the road, it is not what I would call a ball of fire, as relatively steep grades require progessively downshifting to the low side 3rd gear, which it pulls pretty well at the blistering speed of around 12 mph. For the record, I think the 5.9 is a good engine, but it always makes me chuckle when somebody quotes the medium duty sales pitch and realy seems to beleive in their heart that the little 5.9 will run like a N-14 400hp Big Cummins just because it shares the same inline 6 design and is used in some medium duty trucks just like the Duramax [c5500] or powerstroke [F-650]. Equaly amusing is the "my neighbors brother in law had one of those jap GM diesels in his truck, and Melted 3 sets of aluminum cylinder heads towing his jet ski`s to the boat ramp in 10,000 miles. He found out from GM that the 3/4 inch thick cylinder head was melting before the 1/8 inch thick piston dome because the piston is going realy fast, and the wind cools it down, while the cylinder head is bolted in place and cant move" :D

I'd consider that 5500 medium duty too, with a light duty engine ;)

And I'd consider the 5.9L Cummins as having been replaced by a 6.7L Cummins because it can't cut it anymore with all the pollution crap hooked to it, but the Duramax can. :D

You 5.9L guys really crack me up. I've driven more medium duty trucks than I care to remember. Everytime I got done driving one I came away thinking how overwhelmed the 5.9L was in a medium application.

Swines,

Thank you for your opinion noted earlier in the thread. I believe your statement(s) to be true, in account. As another observation, I also have been unable with my research to susbstantiate this oft-cited link between Peugeot and Ford DEFINITIVELY coming together to specifically produce a LARGER displacement diesel engine for light duty trucks. Is this an urban diesel myth?

Have you seen the crumple zones on a Volvo????

You have an accident with it...It is big bucks to fix...;)

My F250 has run over a volvo or two in its lifetime. If you look carefully at my bumpers you may be able to see a dent, depending on the lighting and angle of course.
