Curious what you are seeing?

Fire Engines in our district have been pretty reliable; they see heavy use under some poor(ie fire ground) conditions.

In our new 2012's......injection pump failures, egr failures, turbo failures poor fuel mileage and air compressors grenading. Then poor parts support as in "we haven't seen that problem, but we have a new and improved part but it is currently back ordered." Nothing like 3 month old $180,000.00 trucks sitting in the dealers for a month waiting for parts.

Really? We are not talking 6.0 here right?

No, I am referring to the new 6.7L Ford in-house diesel engine... it has issues. While I have only read about very well documented Injection pump problems, our company has witnesses first hand the failures of these engines. The fuel filtration system is sub-standard, it allows water to bypass when the filter takes on loading. Not a case of bad fuel, just normal water accumulation from the processes of making and delivering fuel to retail stores. When it bypasses the factory filters installed by Ford dealers, it wipes out the injectors/pump. Fords official policy on this is "bad fuel" no warranty. File it on your insurance..
The cab and chassis version of this engine is lower hp software and different turbo. The engines are experiencing a high failure rate, more specifically, the exhaust valve cracking and destroying the engine. The turbos are having failures independent of the engine failures.
The valve failure issue had at one time, seemed to be isolated to the 300 hp. enignes, but recently, there have been two reports of the exhaust valve failures happening on the 400 hp. pickup engine. The 400 hp. engines are also breaking turbos.. Friends of ours just purchased a 2012 that blew the turbo before the first oil change. His fuel mileage is ok when running empty, but is absolutely pittiful when pulling.
I think Ford will eventually get the issues worked out, its thier engine this time, they cannot blame it on Navistar, so they gotta fix it. But i wonder about the guys that have purchased the earlier units... Maybe Ford will take the lead on their issues and offer up some extra warranty mileage for the early build trucks.

The newest Engines(Ferrara) are a couple years old. All the Engines from the last 8 years or so have used the 8.3 350hp Cummins. Reliability has been good.

Comparing the 5.9, 6.7, whatever Cummins to one of the larger Cummins offerings is hardly the same. No sleeves, aluminum pistons. And, how many fuel pump failures after going from the P700 to the 24V electronic? The dowel pin, the 53 block. Still, Cummins was and would be my choice.

Along with that, I would never buy a Dodge (again) save for the Cummins.

While we are bashing engines, consider the C15 twin turbo CAT. I had my share of them for a couple of years and all I could say is I was glad the company was footing the bills. Pitty the owner/op.

I may be wrong but I believe the focus was on vibration and noise for GM and Ford going with a V configuration?

Detroit, Cummins and CAT had their day with the V8's. The 8V71 and the 903's I knew would run flat out but whimper on the hills. Never drove a CAT V8 but I can recall one day during the first so called fuel scare in the early seventies. Painted on the back of a trailer, "buy a V8 CAT, get 2.5mpg".

Lastly, particularly with the Cummins, way back when these diesels were getting stuffed into pickups, no engineer thought of where the demand for yet more power was going to go. Bottom line, medium duty engine in a truck with marginally heavy driveline components. Add to that, ULSD and the EPA. Guess that 40-60K price of admission is just the beginning?

You are talking about ISX's ? The choices are getting fewer.

?

No sleeves and aluminum pistons really isnt an issue. with just good normal maintenance, that combo will last much longer than any of the pickups that Ford, GM, or Dodge can build.

The C-15 TT, you must be talking about an OTR engine... Good thing the inustrial versions dont have all that crap on them!!.

A V configuration may not be the best for vibration or noise.:)

The truth about diesel trucks and for that matter all 3/4 ton and up.

Ford Super Duty (F-450/F-550 not included):
193,822 trucks diesel only

Ram (4500/5500 cab-and-chassis included):
75,867 trucks diesel only

Chevrolet Silverado HD:
74,027 trucks diesel only

GMC Sierra HD:
28,555 trucks diesel only

38% of Fords truck sales are 3/4 ton and up. Dodge is at the same ratio of 38% of 3/4 ton and up. GM is at 20% 3/4 ton and up. This ratio is for all 3/4 ton and up, gas and diesel.

Note: Dodge had to include the 4500 and 5500 and still don't hold a candle to Ford. GM, well they dont make any big trucks.

So yes, Ford does seem like it has more issues but its the simple fact that they sell 3 times the number of truck than Dodge and twice as many plus over GM.

The only thing about saying Ford has more issues simply due to selling more cars is that game can be turned back the other direction....
Several months ago, myself and three Ford engineers were standing in a service department while they were pouring over my company truck.... These trucks have had tons of major issues,
One of the engineers spouted off about how they have only had an 8% failure rate of the new engine... My response was that I was completely sure that each and every one of those customers would agree that it was a 100% failure!!..
You could have heard a friggin' pin drop!!.

Just out of curiosity, what service are these trucks in and what are the major issues. Three "engineers"? You must work for a very large account or your problem must be very serious to warrant three factory guys in attendance.
