Thanks for the info on the PTO fix. I only mentioned the worse things, there's both front rims that have serious dings at the bead, a rusted out left rear fender, tach is in bad shape, hour meter works but can't say much more than that about it. It's all fixable I know and I can do the work, I have the tools and ability, just not looking to get into something that I spend the next month working on when I have other projects that need my attention. Except for the PTO I could use as i; but I don't have any equipment that is in such run down condition and I'm not ready to start a junk collection.

If I were to offer 3000 or less; I doubt he'd go for it; his bottom line is more than that I can tell from talking to him.

offer it and point out why.. tell him you realize he likely won't sell it.. but it's your offer, and you'd be glad to call back and check it again if it hasn't sold.

I've bought many tractors that were offered for sale 2500$ more than I paid, after they sat 2 weeks, 2 months, or a year not selling.

the dings in the bead are no big deal if a tube tire.. unseat tire, beat dents out or use a jack.. reseat tire and tube..e tc.

fender? 150$ new.. or 25$ bondo / fiberglass.. and a rattle can of paint.

cluster? thats a couple dead presidents +/- depending...

I will get back to him. I told him I would research what it would cost to fix the PTO.

I'm also looking at model 2000 tomorrow. gas motor, 8 spd, live PTO

What's the major difference between the 2000 and a 3000.. Horsepower?

very little. depending on axle style // might have the round axles.. and no diffy lock..e tc.

some 'rateing' difference.. etc.

all things considered.. I'd take a better condition 2000 over a worse condition 3000.... just not much tangible difference.. the 2000's were economy.. more often had a basic 4spd or twin 6.. etc...

I'm leaning towards the 2000 model needs cleaning up but looking past the dirt I think it's a better buy

There is a 8N in good condition near me for sale. Has been cleaned up, repainted and appears to have no active leaks. Tires are good no signs of dry rot or serious damage with about 50% life remaining.

No one was home to get to fire it up and hear it run or a test drive, so everything above is based on a static display.

My Q is it worth considering for caring for a small lot (~10 acres) to handle mowing and maybe a box blade for light grading of the drive.
About 4 acres needs mowing in addition to the lawn right around the house. This is my in-laws property and they need someone to care for the Yard for them as its too much for them to do at their age. So I was considering the 8N but I think the asking price is a bit high at $3000
I don't have a pic but it does look to be well cared for and fully functional.

Should I go back and have a real look and maybe haggle for a better price or move on to something else?

I grew up on an 8N and the functionality is not even close to my Kubota B 2710. We're talking $2000 vs $16000 so its not a fair comparison, but its 2-wheel drive, no power steering, cantankerous gear trans, pretty sure no live PTO, and you have to work on it all the time. Plus, getting loader on it is a problem - just doesn't work that well.

Now that I look at that last photo I think maybe I should have had the tractor back just a tad more. From the angle the photo is taken it looks like the front of the trailer is heavy, but it did not feel that way. Where I loaded was maybe not as level as this parking lot so didn't catch it. and when I stopped to check my rigging about 5 miles later there was no level spot to pull of in, just the grass on the side of the road.

that 4spd crashbox is as basic and tough a transmission as you can get. not cantankerous at all.

if you had to work on it all the time.. you weren't fixing it.. just bandaiding it..

once fixed.. a tractor runs good.. old or not.

nice! rops and all!!

yup, got the canopy too. its in the bed of the truck when I took the photo. Does the canopy have some steel structure inside it? Seems heavy for fiberglass alone.

Missing the top link and the drawbar though. Shouldn't be hard to replace those for a few bucks.
