Thanks Soundguy. If you look at post 37, the battery certainly looks to be neg ground, and the battery looks like a 12v to me. I didn't pay close attention to notice the voltage when i took those photos, and it may be a moot point now, as i stopped by the bank after work this afternoon and drew out some cash then drove over to give it another look and make an offer, and it was gone. I don't know yet if it sold or they just took it in. Anyway i will contact them this evening and see what's up.

There were no hoses running off the valve block, so i assume it was never used. Hard to tell with fresh paint but no signs hydraulic hoses were ever connected. 4 gpm is not much.

Well the 4000 is gone. But in talking to the seller I find out he has a 641 Powermaster for sale too. I'm heading over to look at it this evening.
What to watch out for in particular on this model?

Maybe I'll be coming home with a new (to me) tractor. :)

Yes the 4000 was sold. Looked at the 641 but it wasn't in as good condition as the 4000. By the serial number it was a '58. Should have spoke sooner on that 4000 I guess, it only lasted a couple days. Probably won't see another like that anytime soon with the original bill of sale and all.

Strange thing on the 641 was it had the PowerMaster decal on the hood, but it should have been WorkMaster right? It was a model 641 by the stamping above the serial number.

So I'm still looking.

501,601,701 was a workmaster, 801,901 was a powermaster... but tin gets swapped alot.

valve like had hoses rot off and then outlets plugged.

the 641 is alot less tractor than that 4000 was ( 34 vs 48 ) hp ..

12v conversions on them machines are common. tisco even makes a bracket kit that allows an alternator to bolt right up.

many of my red tiger fords have 12v systems... most with alternators.. some with stealth conversions via generator :)

Tomorrow I hope to look at a model 3000.
Don't know the year or anything else except the ad says runs good (dont they all) and good rubber.

but these have power steering and some other improvements so might be worth a bit more.

at least i will be older than the tractor. :)

If that's the pic.. so far I see it's a twin stick tranny.. menaing 6spd or 8spd. Good chance of getitng live pto.

It's a gasser.. not my first choice.. but if it runs good... cool... and has ps cyls. sheet metal seems like post 68.

Pass. Bad sheet metal, the photo does not tell the story, poor paint job, PTO pops out, 3500+ hrs, needs one rear tire, gauges are in poor condition. No leaks, starts right up and takes the throttle OK, ran through all the gears but had some trouble with fourth. The shift lever was loose and when you shifted to 4th it would rotate and this stopped you from getting into 4th without a lot of fiddling. Asking price way out of line. It's a 73 year, model C1023C = 8 spd gasser w/live PTO

Anyone have an idea what might be wrong with the PTO that it will not stay engaged. Seller says the level pops out of engagement when he tried using a rotary cultivator. He re-engaged but 30 feet or so later it pops out again. Kept doing it so he stopped using it and never pursued finding out why. Is there an adjustment maybe or some other correction that needs to be made?

pto pops out due to a bad bearing, or spring clip or bearing carrier. if allowed to do it it will eventually wear the dog clutch and pto shaft.

if taken care of early enough, it's a MAX of a 150$ fix, if you repalce dthe entire shaft and bearing carrier / seal assemble.. 1 half hour 4-bolt job... not sure why some people neglect the easy fixes... otherwise.. each tim eit pops out under load, the shaft end can chew up or mush room from being hammered, and the dog clutch can be chewed up. alot of times what happens is a pto shaft won't telescope or is too long and pushed back on the pto and pops a split ring out, either breakign he ring or damaging the groove in the bearing carrier.. or.. from honest bearing wear. this bearing wear usually hogs the seal eventually. test by turning tractor off and then grabbing pto stub to see if it has in / out or up / down movement. the ones that disengage almost always have in /. out movement..

point nose down so you don't drain the oil, etc.

some people bunji the selector into position so it can't pop out of engage,ent... this 'bandaid' is a lil better as it keep spressure on the dog clutch and the clutch and shaft never come apart.. thus they don't chew up.. but.. the shaft end can still mushroom from hammering.. eventually making it impossible to engage / disengage the pto.

if you don't want to buy the repalcement shaft assy and bearing carrier, and your bearing carrier isn't bad.. then you can get a new seal, bearing and wear ring from a CNh dealer and then rebuild it yourself. I've done plenty of mine. ps.. on a 3 cyl like that.. I'd engage the pto before slipping the shaft out...

shifter slop? locating pin worn. not the end of the world... replaceable one way or the other.. either new shifter or salvage shifter and plate..e tc.. or new pin.. if socket is chewed.. can be welded.. etc. etc.. it'd want to pay 2800-3000 not a penny mor for that one. I already see 350$ in a tire, and up to 150 in pto shaft.. if you change the oil in the rear.. kick in another 100... shifter work.. 50$.. etc...
