My 1991 Ford Explorer, Eddie Bauer edition has to be hands down the worst thing I every bought that had a motor. Bought it brand new, wife told me we had to keep it 20 years, big mistake. This was our first car with air, leather, sunroof, etc.
After the warranty was up the air conditioning went, had to replace the whole unit because of the Freon upgrade. Then the head gasket went, had to have the heads remachined flat. Rad had to be replaced, then the 4 wheel hubs 3 times, last time went to Warren hubs. It was green in color and over the years parts of it turned white, bad paint. Then another rad, then the whole engine was replaced and within a few months the transmission had to be rebuilt. Then the 3rd rad. Then the air conditioning went again but did not bother to fix it. Then the 4 X 4 switch would only work if you had been driving for awhile, seems like the car had to warm up first. There were some other issues as well. Last fall it went to the crusher, not sad to see it go there at all.
On the bright side ;) :confused2: I bought a Ford Ranger Supercab 4 X 4, two reasons I got it, really was the type of vehicle we needed, got a smoking deal on the price as it was model year end and we ended getting $1,000. from Ford Credit for junking our Explorer and another $300. from the government as well for junking it. Never thought I would get $1,300.  for that badly rusted  out piece of junk. Of course the wife asked why I got another Ford, said whoever built the Explorer was probably retired :p by now.

Sorry for you bad experiance,

Might had been another one of them bad year makes, I didn't keep our expedition around long enough to find out just what all would break down;)
we have had 4 explorers in our family from a '95. 96, 2000, and 04 all of which have been great vehicles, my wife owns the 2000 and has 180-k on it although it does have the 5.0 engine which is a great engine:thumbsup:

Mousefield - we had a 91 Exploder for over 10 years. Pinion seal went out after a delivery truck whacked the rear quarter panel, and two teenagers learning to drive toofed the transfer case. Lord only knows how much additional punishment that vehicle endured at the hands of teenagers. Sold it for more than it was worth after a decade of abuse.

Other than the transfer case, it was the second best vehicle we have owned behind an 80' 150 PU with a straight 6.

Thinking about it, ultimately the part should be warrantied from the manufacturer for at least one year as long as it is installed by a competent person who handles that product line, however, I think you will be hard pressed to find ANY manufacturer who will pay labor to replace their parts within the parts warrantied life span.

Ultimately, if any labor is going to be covered, that is up to the person/business who installed the part.

i've found that very hit or miss. while I've had good luck getting oem and new aftermarket parts warrantied.. have had dismal time getting independent mech's doing the labor for free... kinda don't blame them.. of course.. they should be able to get their money from the part seller, and the seller from the jobber, if they are selling bad parts ;)

How many have ever purchased a vehicle with what is claimed to have had a Bumper to Bumper warranty....and was the very thing that help decide the purchase....
Back in '99 My MIL purchased a Dodge Mini-van with this kind of Warranty, was said to be anything Fails from bumper to bumper it is covered, about 8 months into owning it she decided to drop in at one of these drive through car washes, she chose the button to get the supreme wash, which included the undercarriage wash that she was not aware of, she said after running it through she heard the engine making a loud noise, after getting it home for me to look at I found the exhaust manifold had been cracked, She then contact the dealership and made an appointment to bring it in, she thought it was to be repaired free of charge, she told them what had happen about washing the car, The rep from the dealership found that this particular part was not covered under the bumper to bumper Warranty, and suggest that it was of her negligence that she run it through the wash resulting in cold water hitting the hot part and cracked it, she had a few choice words for him and explain about driving cars in the rain etc, etc, and told them how she felt about there so called bumper to bumper Warranty, The best the dealership could do was to wave the Labor cost, she still wound up paying 235.00 for the manifold, which her and I thought was extremely high, she told them that her SIL could have picked up a used one for 35.00 and installed it for free as well. and that their Bumper to bumper warranty wasn't worth the paper its' written on, ... yeah she a real twister :D
was 2 lessons learned there, #1 - Bumper to Bumper does not necessary mean everything between the bumpers is under warranty and #2- not to run your Hot engine through an undercarriage car-wash,;)

i've seen alot of those bumper to bumper 'drive traine' warranties. sometimes a fuel / emission warranty too.

very rarely do you get true 'anything' coverage, even with the extra plans you can purchase..
