Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

'91 f150 xlt 2wheel drive... The truck ran well, but that was when i could get it started... I got tired of going to junk yards, etc.

Jim, i don't think they make things like they used to..

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

Well, I guess they werent the best then, although I believe everyone went through that stage. Dodge in the late 70's, Chevy in the 70's-80's, Ford in the late 80's-early 90's. Nothin lasts forever /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My personal opinion on:

THANK GOD!!!

We dont have to adjust points, tune up every 12-20k, adjust carburators, pray for consistent weather and hope you dont drive to different altitudes.Turn your air off to get 10mpg and 30hp more. Boy those were the days huh.....

No offence, those vehicles were neat at the time, but its hard to beat a newer one. '95 and up made great strides for all manufacturers.

Had I been able to afford a newer truck i would have moved up to a much newer unit. Although I can't say that the newer trucks are all better. My neighbors had a new Expidition and it was the biggest gas hog they ever owned.

Yeah,
But I'll bet it was a nice riding, cool, quiet, and reliable gas hog. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

I agree, wish I could afford that new $55k pickup myself. even with all the incentives and 72mo financing now your still in the mortgage payment range.

Thats part of the thing we need to remeber when comparing to the old days. These days, no one tools arround at 55-60mph like they did way back when. Its more like 80-85(on the back roads) here in Atlanta. So everyone complains about the fuel economy. You had to have serious testicular fortitude to do that in the 60's. Those vehicles didnt handle very well..

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

hgm, about the 'not built like they used to be...' you probably knew what i meant, things do not seem to last like they used to... but as you've pointed out, we dont use 'em like we used to either... as for me, i drive the speedlimit, both for economy reasons and because i dont need any trouble, it finds me....... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

Yea, times change.. We just have to try to keep up with them..Wish I could do the speed limit myself, maybe save a little fuel, unfortunatly I have to get on "Atlanta Motor Speedway" /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif every day for about 65miles each way, and you just have to keep up.. Not to mention just "git" while you can, before the trafic gets you.. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

The thing I don't understand is why, with modern materials and manufacturing, these trucks are getting so doggone heavy! Well, trucks and cars for that matter. My boss' new F-150 extra cab (or whatever they call them now) weighs over 6k lbs! No wonder they suck gas!

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

When they extend the cab they need to stiffen up the frame. That equals more weight. Why it weights over 6k is beyond me too since it is a F150. My F250 weights under 6K. It is a standard cab 4x4. They also boxed the frame in the newer Fords.

Well the truck is finally back together and running. All I need to do is set the timing once I find the mark on the rusted crank damper and install the air intake hoses. I had to make a bolt with the extended threads on them to hold the coil. Ford didn't have one available. I also had to replace the alternator due to the hot wire lug breaking off. Ouch with the price of one of those rebuilt at $135.00.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

Yea, they are geting heavy. The best illistration I have seen regarding that was the Toby Keith commercial where he is in the dinner and talks to the other guys about the frames of their trucks. It's kinda funny, but they have run into alot of vibration and ride issues with this truck because its so stiff and tuff. I too agree it should be lighter than a super duty, however someones research showed it should be heavier.

I havent priced one in a while, but I remember the local autozone or something of the sort had their remans prety cheap with lifetime warranty. That may be what you looked at but it sounds higher than I remember.
