Ford V-6 beats v-8's in towing competition

For every change in the drivetrain (Hp, axle ratio, transmission), the manufacturer has to go through certification testing that equals increased costs. Along with that, you have to look at customer demand and reliability issues.

It would increase costs, but right now this does happen with larger trucks. You have to go to a dealer to get a new or different program for power setting. Motorcycles have selectable fuel maps (Suzuki is one) right from the factory they have some models with 3 fuel and timing maps and GM was doing the displacment on demand. Farm and construction equipment now have "power boost" or what ever they want to call it where under certain conditions the engine will "boost" 10-15% more power when needed.

I would think with a diesel it would be even better, you take the max Hp and work backwards. That if anything should increase reliability.

Interesting discussion. Here diesel has been 10cents cheaper per liter over a while I have watched it. Now it is about the same price.

I must admit that part of the reason I like the idea of a diesel is a bit nostalgic. Nothing sounds better than a diesel.

I'm not sure what you're saying. All cars computers are full of fuel maps, its how they run. Not all have torque or power management.

Commercial diesels have torque or hp managment because the same motor goes in multiple chassis and the manufacturer doesn't want to destroy rear ends and transmissions so they use a lower peak mapping. Its easy to cut off a driveshaft in low gears and heavy loads in a heavy truck that the owner has remapped to the highest fuelling.

Farm equipment power boost lets the engine operate at higher hp when there are pto or hydraulic loads that aren't transmitted via the powertrain so the increased power won't destroy things. Its really not a power boost, its just a torque/power management. Many have an additional torque limiter on the mapping so you don't have full torque in low gears that would blow an axle to smithereens.

I agree, and have mentioned in other threads. It would be nice to have a lower power economy version. Maybe even a "smallblock".

I remember when you had multiple versions of GM 396's. Even in the old Chevelles, you could get a base level HP, entry level SS HP, or the full-house high end SS. Mopar did the same. Ford did. And, that was on top of you could get a 283, 327,350, or 400 small block. At various power levels. And a 396, 402, 427, 454.

It would be great to have a few options for size and HP/Tq in the diesel.

But, competition drives the numbers. My '01 Dodge started at 235HP; 2011 diesels are bumping 400hp! Almost wonder if the insurance companies and government are gonna start limiting stuff like they did in the early '70's.

But it seems between the big three that it is al about a HP war. And mileage is suffering. They are going the wrong direction if the "NEW" diesels are only getting 13-14mpg.

The thing about diesels is fuel=power. More fuel=more power.

I am sure most that own these 750HP deisels are NOT tied to a 20,000lb trailer ALL the time. Why do you need 750HP when you are snow plowing??? or just running to the store??? or pulling an empty trailer???

Nothing except a BIG cubic inch v8 with some flowmasters or glasspacks:D

IMO of course

I like the sound of a real 426 Hemi or 440-6pack with glasspacks :D Buddy had a Ford 427 dual quad side oiler in his boat. It had the steel crank and stuff; it had a 7000+rpm redline straight from Ford. It sounded really good when it was spun up :D

For the doubters of this new 3.5 gaser, take a look at this latest article and video.

It's amazing that it was using half the fuel they expected to use at one point. If this latest test doesn't start to convince some more of you, I don't think anything will. Ford is doing what no one has done, torturing a new designed engine in many ways, announcing it BEFORE the torture and doing it in full public view. It was a huge gamble. After viewing this latest in the series of tests it is hard to deny this is a game changer. Even with some bumps ahead of it, it sure looks like a new page in engine designs.

If you seriously think Ford is putting out all these "real world tests" without knowing and fabricating the exact outcome then your as gullible as the rest. Want to buy some ocean-front property in Wyoming?

I keep hearing about aftermarket tuner gizmos for trucks and cars that claim to "optimize" or custom tune your ecu on a gas truck. I've heard people claim 1-2 mpg benefits. Call me skeptical but is this really possible? Why wouldn't the big 3 be doing this given the pressure to increase MPG on their fleets.

Anyone here had any first hand experience with these ?

I have put them on my 3 Ford diesels and maybe saw a 1 mpg increase but I did it just for the fun factor.

If you do the math lets say the average 1/2 ton gasser gets 15mpg and gas is $3.00 per gallon. Thats $.20 per mile. Now lets say you can manage 17mpg with one of these tuners and the fuel is still $3.00 per gallon. You are now at $.18 per mile. Lets say the average person drives 15,000 miles a year. You are only saving $300 per year. Most of these tuners are that much or more so its a 20,000 mile repay item.
