Nice work, I'm sure it will be appreciated

I just found this thread and wanted to post to subscribe.

I just acquired a military style Yanmar genset with an L100 engine. It puts out I believe 28volts dc and is designed to charge, and auto start and backup a set of batteries.

Anybody need anything like this?

Sounds interesting how about some photos & details.

Hello,

I have a Dayton 5000 watt generator with a Yanmar L100V in it. I was wondering if you guys could listen to it run and watch the multimeter voltage and tell me if you think it is normal.

In the video I turn on a 900 watt leaf blower and it brings the engine RPMs down quite a bit, but it does recover and actually goes up to over 140 volts before it stabilizes. There is no other load on the generator.

Is the governor slow to respond or do they all act like that? I've never been around or tested other generators so I have nothing to compare to.

Thanks for any insight.

I have a portable air cooled (ALL) Yanmar 3.7KW set. It is the last in line of a series of backups. Aside from the horrible noise, when asked to, it will run the house, and you would never know you were running on generator up to its capacity. It starts the jet pump without issue. No regulation or surging issues.

If it is a 5000 watt generator a 900w leaf blower plugged in, it should not miss a beat. I would say something is a miss? Cant say what though. How old is your fuel, when did you last change your filter?

Thanks for the replies.

The unit has 15 hours on it now. It had been sitting for a couple of years according to the guy I bought it from. He had bought it for the deer lease and just never used it. It had 1 hour on it when I bought it.

I drained the fuel and replaced with fresh diesel, and put a new fuel filter on it. Also changed the oil and filled it with 15-40 Rotella, because I didn't know what he had in it.

I think it is the governor sticking or malfunctioning some kind of way, but I don't have any experience at all with these kind of engines. The engine seems to have plenty of power when the governor does get around to giving it enough fuel. I have had a 4500 watt draw plugged in and it ran fine once it stabilized. No smoke at all.

Any comments are appreciated. I THINK it is the governor but I certainly don't know. Seems like I read somewhere online that Yanmar will only sell the complete governor and not any parts for the assembly, it that ends up being what it is.

I have 2 of these generators with Yanmar power, and I know that what you demonstrated is not correct. You should not notice much change in the engine pitch, speed , Hz or voltage when you power up a 900 w draw. I know electric motors have a higher startup draw but it is just 1/10th of a second. Your video shows the voltage fall, and then rise way too high as the governor compensates. Make sure your governor springs are in the correct holes for your application. There is a diagram in the online manual fort he L100 series. The governor should act quickly and should feel free and snap back and forth with no "dampening" when the motor is not running. Check it for feel with the motor off. Check the manual for the type governor setup your engine has.
