Ok, air cooled diesel stupid question #337... I think I know the answer to this, but I figured it cost nothing to run it by the experts here.

I think I may have found the original cause of my "failure to start" problem, the problem that ultimately led to much cranking and a broken piston (believe it or not).

The external stop/run lever has connects to an internal u-shaped lever (I'll call "LeverA" for clarity, see 1st photo) that moves what is evidently a fuel shutoff lever (with the rounded head) on the injector pump (see 2nd photo). Can I assume that the u-shaped part of the LeverA is supposed to fit over the rounded pin? Ok, I thought so. When I was trying to start this I couldn't get any fuel out of the high pressure side of the injector pump, so I pulled off the injector today, mainly to check the solenoid. The rounded pin was *not* in the u-shaped pocket of LeverA, it was to the left of LeverA - which as far as I can see is the shutoff position. I've only run this generator for about 30 hours, but I'm wondering if I was just lucky that thing ever started? I've never really used the Stop/Run lever, so maybe the fuel shutoff happened to be in the run position, until unluckily it got moved to the off position.

That regulates how much diesel the pump gives out, the regulater gives more diesel when the load increases the rpm drops and the regulator gives more diesel by adjusting the pump to keep rpm constant.

On the older pumps there are a small cover you can remove to inspect that everything is in place and moves as it should.

Thanks for the info.

About my question - did I describe the proper placement of the round headed pin in the u-shaped lever?

Yes, you are correct on that

Hi Fellas

Okay, I got the whole thing apart.
The piston looks good, the cam shaft bearings look good, pretty clean interior.
Here are some pictures, please take a look and let me know if you spot anything amiss.
I just received my gaskets, so I will be cleaning everything up and slowly putting it back together.
I have a few threads to fix, they stripped during disassembly.
I don't see any signs of excessive wear.
I still need to pull the wrist pin out to inspect that, it's a bit stubborn.

Looks to be in nice condition.
Run a hone up & down the bore to deglaze, soak the piston in purple power to decarbonize install new rings & go. Check valves & seats also.
I have reused the crankcase gasket gasket in the past with no problems.
I cleaned the surfaces then use yamabond or Honda engine sealant on both sides of gasket being very stingy (no excess) and never had an issue.
Even with new gaskets I like the assurance of no leaks.

What does the Rod bearing & pto main bearing look like??
Rod bearing is very cheap if needed.
