We finally made it back to Scottsdale, from up near Reno, to visit Sandy. We were there on Tuesday for a very nice visit.
It's been three years, almost to the day, since we delivered her and she immediately recognized us. She is living with a coyote male named Shorty that is about one year older. They are a very happy couple and I'm sure he has helped to stabilize her emotionally. Of course, he did not know what to make of us being there, or her giving us all her attention, but she paid little attention to that distraction and was genuinely happy to see us. We could not go into her enclosure and she was not let out, so all of our interaction was through a chain link fence. But that did not stop her from jumping around, sticking her paws through the wires and then sticking her slender nose through. Lots of little whimpering sounds like she used to make with Bei Bei. She stood next to the fence as I scratched her tummy. She closed her eyes, stood as though hypnotized, and loved the touching. Bei Bei was happy to see her too, but pretty soon was more distracted by a tortoise and other noises. Clearly, Bei Bei was much less affected by seeing her than Sandy was at seeing us.
We also brought along a couple of frozen rabbits we got from the local butcher, just for this occasion, and thawed them on the way down. She has always loved rabbit and eagerly took parts of these while Shorty had little interest in them.
The visit wore her out and she took a short nap while we were there, then back to the playing and greeting.
At 3 1/2 years old she is just the same as when we dropped her off. Friendly, fun, expressive, very responsive to human touch, quiet, healthy, etc. She even seeks attention from the crew that walks past her enclosure. She has never exhibited any dangerous behaviors and the staff can go in to sit with her whenever they want to, and they do.
This was a very touching visit and another excellent chapter in her life story. Once again we were impressed with her good nature and caring ways as well as how she instantly knew us.
We took lots of pictures and a few videos. When we get home we'll put them together and post them.
