At the end of the article is says the well was improperly sealed. Don't taint the whole industry by one screwup.

The O&G industry hasn't had just one screwup. They've had thousands since they first hit oil in the US. It's worth asking if they screw up often enough that we should no longer trust them and if the ease of getting energy via the O&G (compared to other sources) outweighs the continual screwups.

The O&G industry is largely responsible for our nation being the great nation it is. and it allows us to use and enjoy our tractors. living in the middle of the shale drilling i've yet to witness any significant issues with drilling.
It's all for the good of our country.

It's a hard job and screw-ups are going to happen. Most times when there is a screw-up, it's not lack of care or caution, it is generally an unaccounted variable that wasn't considered, or the variable varied from what was expected.

I personally think what lack of care there is, comes into play after the screw-ups have happened. They're always the first to accept what has happened and are prepared to move on about their business. They know the screw-ups will happen no matter what they do. The only thing they see resembling a solution is to double down to cover the losses of the screw-ups and hope "bad luck" doesn't strike again soon.

It's all for the good of the very, very rich and the mega corporations. Not in any way convinced it's for the good of you and me.

Cheap energy that we can waste without thought is what led all the world though the incredible expansion of the 20th Century and made almost every country what it is today. Our world is a finite place. At some point we have to face up to the fact that the expansion of the 20th century is unsustainable and start thinking about ways other than O&G to get our society through the 21st century.

I don't agree with your "unsustainable" claim in the least. There is enough oil on the planet we could fill our swimming pools with it. However ... technology will continue to move forward and our reliance on fossil fuels will diminish - not necessarily out of need but better efficiency.

That's only true because all the swimming pools in the world are a drop in the bucket compared to how much oil the world uses.

If you guys are so against hydraulic fracturing, quit burning fuel. Give up your tractor and cars. Go back to the horse and buggy days if you want everything au natural. This isn't the 1970's where there were no regulations to abide by. If your willing to do that, then maybe the industry will listen when your demand for the fuels starts making the production of the fuels uneconomical. Otherwise, do some actual research instead of listening to the drivel the extremists have put out there. Many of the claims are unsubstantiated or blatant attempts at putting a black eye on the industry. There are many states where this stuff is alot more wild, PA is not one of them.

Edit-All the oil craze started in PA, The true home of Oil & Gas drilling.

What is an amish doing on the internet? I have to assume from your posts you don't own vehicles, you don't have a tractor, you don't use anything with gas / oil / hydraulic fluids, you don't use anything made of plastic, you heat your house entirely with wood products, you are off grid, etc......

These big bad evil companies are the reason most of the world have jobs and can enjoy life.

Wow! That's a big statement. So do you feel the company should be responsible to fix things? The companies have laws protecting them now. Is it ok if a nuclear power plant has "one screwup?" If a company wants to be in a business with high risks of causing SIGNIFICANT damage, they need to be able to handle that. There's a reason why a lot of big companies have smaller sub companies. It's an attempt to limit their liability. Remember that it wasn't BP that contaminated the gulf several years back. It was a smaller company few people had heard of. Let's not trivialize "one screwup."
