Try this

Page 17 and 18 I think applys to your situation.

That's exactly the type of table I've been looking for! I guess "floor edge beam" is the correct name for what I've been referring to as a ledger.

Very interesting thread. The table you linked to lists (3) 2x10 for use as ledgers (sorry, floor edge beams) in a 12x12 layout. I am curious, since that is obviously far more than is needed to handle vertical shear load, is the point of so much lumber for lateral ridigity, to prevent the type of bowing that led to the failure in the haybarn link?

Also, the 2x4 sleeper under the joist ends sounds like a great idea. After reading about the collapse of the hay loft I might also add strapping across the top of every third or fourth joists and wrap it over the ledger.

BOTH.

You have to account for vertical and horizontal forces as well as twisting of the lumber.

Obviously, the 3 2x10's would be fine, but I would still upsize to the 2x12's. It wont cost that much more in the grand scheme of things, but for piece of mind as well as making a 2x4 "sleeper as you call it" work perfectly.

Also have you considered my earlier mention of NOT using 18" centers for the joists?? Either 19.2" or 16" centers work out better for 8' dimensions.

Thanks for all the great info guys.

Yes, makes too much sense not to!

Wise decision

Have you considered using LVL's to carry the weight between the posts? They are way stronger than dimensional lumber.
