OK, but will water ever flow out the faucet again before the spring thaw.

No, no, Al, just one little town./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

And Harv, I don't know much about the density of ice, what happens to it at different temperatures, pressures, etc., but the first time we drove to Alaska (July '72), our RV had a refrigerator, but my aunt and uncle were in one with an ice box so they had to buy blocks of ice periodically. When we got to the Portage Glacier in Alaska, we got a chunk of ice out of the water that had floated downstream from the glacier and sawed it down to fit their ice box. That chunk of ice lasted twice as long as any they bought of the same size. In later years, I saw a story on TV about some guides who mixed customers drinks using ice from the Portage Glacier saying the drinks retained their full strength because that ice didn't melt as fast and dilute the drinks./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bird,
That kind of talent has no bounds, flipping your Mom's pot holders one day, Then 1st Place in small town contest, next it's the White House.

Case in Point, from the New Hampshire Primary:

"Whether it was by the will of the Almighty or not, Bauer suffered a quite literal reverse on the Monday morning before the election which seemed designed as a symbolic period to his hopes. While participating in a pancake-flipping contest in Manchester, he tumbled backwards and managed to flip himself off the back of the stage -- a moment which was transmitted to the rest of the nation via TV replays later that night and, indeed, for days to come.
<font color=blue>For the record, George W. Bush, taking part in the same contest, managed to flip his patty and catch it on the skillet perfectly. It was, perhaps, his last satisfying moment of the campaign.</font color=blue>"

Isn't this George guy from your state, hmmmm... did he stop by your place for any tips?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The article you referred to both confirms my college lab experiment and states that hot water doesn't "normally" freeze faster than cold. I accept that.

I had to go back and re-read most of this thread to figure out how we got where we are. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif All I could conclude is that if you take the proper precautions, a pipe full of water may freeze and burst your pipe -- or not.

It's God's will. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I added the hot water freezing faster than cold to see what the group had to say. The reason ice makers are connected to the hot water line is that hot water is cleaner than clod, check the inside of a hot water heater. Hot water does not freeze faster it is physically inpossible. It still has to go through the phase changes and also through the temperature changes until it reaches the phase change. The only reason hot water could freeze before cold water is tha the water free of some deposits, but then it is not water if it has other then H20.

As for the pipe, the pipe is open ended, even if it has water at the open end of the frozen area. It would be an interesting experiment to try this, but what caused the pipe to burst, expanding gases or the heat of the flame heating up the pipe.

Harv, You aren't suggesting that we sometimes wander off topic? Man, I sure could go for some of those flap jacks being flipped around.

No, Al, George didn't have to come by for any tips; that talent just comes natural for a Texan./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Of course, I was born in Oklahoma and that's where I still lived when I was in the Boy Scouts, so I had to practice./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I can't beleive I'm getting in on this but here goes.
I have heard that the reason that hot water is piped to an icemaker is so the cubes will be see-through instead of hazy because the hot water gives the ice crystals more time to form into a smooth transparent pattern. But if hot water freezes quicker I guess we have to throw that one out. But one thing I have heard is that if you hook your 'swamp cooler' (evaporative cooler, like the kind used in desert communities) up to hot water, it will make the room cooler than if it was fed with cold water. I always figured that the warmer water was closer to the evaporation point than the cooler water was. But I can't flip a pancake.
