I just go with Gevalia - non flavored. Used to subscribe, now I just buy it in the grocery store. I've tried a lot of different coffee and cannot find any as good as Gevalia- whether organic, locally roasted, etc..
Well, I found one. A New England based, mail order, LOCAL, coffee roaster that mails out the beans freshly roasted! :cool2:
Lucas Roasting Company LLC. | Specialty Coffee, Invigorating Blends
The funny part about this, is that I told my wife I had "posted on my tractor forum about where to buy mail order beans". She replied with..."you should have just asked me". It turns out the exact roastery that used to be in my town, also ships out mail order.
This is the best part, ships within 1-2 days....

I'm very relieved to have found my new supplier![]()
I have no trouble getting well into 2nd crack with my Behmor 1600+ with 0.75-1.0 lbs (the + is important since it indicates the upgraded control panel which allows you to control the roast manually).
The 1600 is about the size of a small microwave. I roast on the stove top under the fume hood--which is an outside vent.
If you decide to home roast, you [must either roast outside or have a vent to the outside. All of the roasters for the home market say they produce little or no smoke. They all lie like a bad dog.
I looked more into the Behmor 1600+. I will very likely try home roasting again this spring. That's encouraging to hear that you don't have any issues getting a good roast out of it, and from the reviews, it appears easy to hear the 1st and 2nd cracks as it's relatively quiet.
How long are you roasting a batch for, and what size batch are you roasting at a time?
I've actually tried the home roasting thing, using an air popper, probably about 10 years ago now. I ordered my beans green from Sweet Maria's. I did like it, I actually enjoyed the whole process, but once winter came along I had a really difficult time getting a consistent roast (roasting outside). I'd love to try it again with a better roaster, and I had looked over the last couple of months off and on, but I don't remember seeing much in the way of roasters in the 300-400 dollar range. I'll check out the Behmore. Can you get a darker roast out of it, or mostly just light to medium?
May I suggest an alternative?
I home roast. I order green coffee beans off of the internet (Sweet Maria's Home Coffee Roasting) for $5-7/lb and roast them at home. After doing it for the last 8 years, I will never go back.
I use a Behmor 1600+ which set me back about $300-400, but you can get much cheaper roasters. You can also use a hot air popcorn popper, a heat gun and a metal bowl or even a cast iron skillet.
+1
I am also a home roaster with a Behmor 1600+ and buy from Sweet Marias. Started with a whirl pop popcorn popper and graduated to the Behmor. I have also bought beans from Bodhi Leaf Coffee Traders but mostly I buy from Sweet Marias.
