I've had better luck than I had today... 😖

They want over $1350 for a new axle.

Guess I'll be working with the welder tomorrow to repair and bolster this one.

Hope y'all had better luck today! 😉

I'll post the repair. Right in the middle of a huge project, with a bigger one after this one is done.

I'm not superstitious, but I now know why I broke the handle on my saw first thing this am. 😖

:D:D

I hear ya!

Nah, I don't think it happened because it's Fri. 13th... I just think that's the date that metal fatigue kicked in.

Mostly, I've pretty good luck on Friday 13th.

Its bad luck when you walk under a ladder and somebody
is above with a pail full of paint and drops it on you:unsure:

My baler went down yesterday evening (bent/cracked billhook tongue). I had the part delivered about 2PM and the tech helped me get it installed in about an hour.
Lost about 3-4 hours of precious hot sun. Had hay all raked up & ready to bale.

Worked till dark to try to claw back some lost time.

That's disappointing. Not something that I would of expected to break. At least it should be a simple repair

Did you take off your covers over your driveshafts? I have one that got caught in some branches and it broke off at the gear box. Now it looks wonky when I'm mowing.

I'm tempted to remove all of them. I don't see the reason for having them, but it's something that I don't want to spend time messing with either.

Eddie, the first thing I do when I buy a shredder is remove all that plastic lawyer crap. Much easier to grease the fittings when removed, and it runs much smoother because it's balanced better without them.

The repair was simple, but complicated. It was simple because all I had to do was realign the axle, weld the crack, then strengthen it.

After the break was welded up, I put 4"x 1/2" thick angle iron between the braces, and welded them in to make the axle stronger. Hopefully it'll last me the rest of the season, as I have LOTS to do, project wise.

With the steel in something like that, you have to pre-heat the steel all around that area before welding, then let it cool slowly without stress, or it can weaken or become brittle.

Break welded up. Used 7018 low hydrogen rods to weld it.

Structural enhancement between braces... should be stronger now.

This fall, when I bring that tractor and cutter home, I'll add the same angle iron between the braces all along that axle, but it was too damned hot to stand out there welding on that thing yesterday... 🥵

Sometimes repairs go better than expected. I had been meaning to repair a cracked weld on my 22 ton splitter but a particularly stubborn knotty cherry broke it bad before I got the chance. I tried hammering the backstop back into position with a sledge but no dice there.

I wrapped a small log chain around the wedge, chained it to the backstop, fired up the little Honda motor, and damned if it didn’t pull itself right back into position. I layed about (5) sticks of 6011 on there and now it’s a much stronger joint than when it left the factory 25 years ago.
