I'm looking for a frost hook for my Kubota BH 92 Back Hoe. I can't seem to find one on line. Any ideas?

Thanks.

What is the difference between a frost hook and a ripper tooth?

Has anyone used something like this to rip red shale? Most of my acreage sits on a 60' thick shale ledge covered by 1 or 2 feet of topsoil. I'm constantly hacking away at the stuff to do even minor excavations. I replaced the 18" bucket (4 tooth) with a 12" (3 tooth) on my BH92 and it helped somewhat. It seems to me a single tooth would be even better. I would love to get one if it would be effective. I'm not looking to dig a foundation or anything that large. I had to hire a D8 Cat to do that. I just need to be able to do some trenching and landscaping tasks.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I am really looking for a root ripper that will fit my backhoe. All of the one i find on-line are to big. I waas told to look for a frost hook. That is the reason for the title of my post. If no one makes them, any one know where I can get plans to build my own?

I picked up a railroad cribbing bucket a few years ago for my Case 530 backhoe. It has 2 teeth and is only about 8" wide so it works better for digging out tree roots than my standard digging bucket (about 20" wide). I found mine on craigslist for about $250- perhaps you could find something similar and modify it to fit your machine.

Not a bad idea, I'll have to watch craigs list to see what comes up.

Thank you.

Off the wall: a steel spring slipped edgewise into two brackets on the inside of the bucket. Held in with one pin and angle grinder sharpened on the leading edge.

Easy to install or remove?.

Until this thread, I had never heard of the term "Frost Hook". Maybe it is a regional thing?

Some call it a root ripper.

Yep, have sure heard of root rippers, or just "rippers", but I have never heard of a Frost Hook.. I guess I have now.:)

Another interesting idea. I'll have to think about this to see what I can come up with.

MIE makes one I think.

Many of the folks who supply a ripper tooth or frost hook will make one to fit your hoe. Give them a call. I got a BroTek (made in Canada) for mine but to tell you the truth I don't think it's the best for ripping roots as the folks with a Piranha tooth seem to have more success with roots. The Piranha has teeth while the BroTek does not and mine is as dull as a froe. What sharpening it has looks like it was done with a torch.

They are sometimes called Frost Picks in our neck of the woods.

MIE's looks like a nice product for the money

Looks like Bro-Tek may have what I'm look for. I've sent them a message. Thanks to all for your help and comments.

Let us know what they say. I haven't had the need for one but I think I might, and I've been waiting for Bro-tek to list one for the BH-92. They have one listed for all of Kubota's other backhoes but not that one. Surely it can't be much different than the BH-90.

They will make one to fit your hoe. All you have to do is supply a few measurements from your bucket detailing the dimensions of the mounting pin holes then they make it up and ship it to you via parcel post. It didn't take long at all and wasn't expensive. About a week I think and I'm on the opposite coast.
Like I said, it could be better for ripping roots if it had teeth like some of the others have.

FWIW, the buckets from my old BH90 fit my BH92 with no problem. The dealer told me all buckets are interchangeable between the 90 and 92 models. I assume the same would be true for a ripper.
