Frozen 60\" MMM

Well, it a story anyways. I decided to mow the field 4+ acres with my 4115 and 60" MMM. It took me about 6+ hours as it hasen't been mowed it over twenty years. It had alot of scrub and weeds and hidden rocks and branches so I had to keep the speed down a bit. Along the way I chipped a few rocks (nice gouges in the blades) and even stallled the tractor twice when a larger than normal segments of buried tree branches became stuck in the mower. I finished my first cut of the field and decided to do the house lot lawn. I started to mow got about forty feet and the tractor stalled out. I restarted the the engine it stalled again and again. I'm getting a bit worried now. I tried once more it stalls again. So I go back to the driveway pull of the mower looking for wire, rope or whatever might be underneath the mower. I found nothing. I put the mower back on (took only 2 minutes, its real easy) started the tractor again, engaged the mid PTO, the tractor stalls. Now I'm even worried. I'm think I have a hydraulic problem or I've jammed the mid-PTO. I pull off the mower again (I'm getting real good at this now) and want to check the mid-PTO to make sure it is spinning. I'm standing by the tractor put the parking brake on, started the tractor, engaged the mid PTO and trying to look underneath the tractor for a rotating mid-PTO shat. Guess what, the tractor stalls. Now I'm confused but for only about 5 minutes beacause I realized I have to be sitting in the seat or the deadman's seat saftey feature comes into play. Now I get a cinder block put it in the seat start the tractor, and engaed the PTO and I see it spinning (what a releif). My attention now is focuesd on the mower. I turn it up on it end and rotate the blades with my hands, no problem here I say. I dropped the mower back down grab the PTO shaft on the MMM to try and rotate it. It doesn't budge. I found the problem. The gear box of the MMM is frozen. I read the manual again and it said check oil after 100 hrs, I only put 6.7 hours on it so far. Now it is time to see how MY dealer responded. Called them on monday morning and after going over the reglular possible problems that might cause this situation they said they would pick it up tuesday. By the way this is the dealer I picked not for being closest (they are 75 miles away and I have two dealers within 15 miles and 5 others within 20 to 40 miles) but this dealer was the one I felt I was most comfortable with and would provided the best service. As the story comes to a close the dealer picked up the mower tuesday and I had it back on thursday all ready to go. As it turns out someone at the dealership had forgotten to replace the oil in the gear box (used for shipping) with the proper gear-box oil for actual mowing usage so now I have a new gear-box on my MMM and it did not cost a dime for transportation.

The moral of the story is:

"ITS THE DEALER NOT JUST THE PRICE"

A very satisifed JD 4115 owner!!!!!!

Re: Frozen 60\" MMM

Good story with a happy ending. One question, the dealer that fixed the problem was this the same dealer that forgot to put the proper oil in the gear box?

Never-the-less, you are absolutely right a good dealer, one who stands behind their products and work makes a world of difference.

Re: Frozen 60\" MMM

Yes it was. As a matter of fact the fellow who delivered the MMM to me told me when they find out who forgot to put in the proper oil has to buy a 30 pack of Bud for the other guys for not checking the gear-box.

Re: Frozen 60\" MMM

I am puzzled over the information you were given that the mower is shipped with "shipping oil" that has to be replaced with the "proper" oil. Something doesn't add up here. Could it possibly have been shipped with "no" oil, and had to have the "proper" oil added? Never heard of having to drain out shipping oil, to be replaced with the correct gear oil. But wonders never cease, and I usually learn new things every day.

Thanks for sharing with us what happened, and glad you are getting good treatment by your dealer. But, a 30-pack seems cheap for the expense the dealer had to cough up for the fix.

Re: Frozen 60\" MMM

I agree, sounds like there was no oil in gearbox. Never heard of shipping oil before, there is breakin oil that some manufactures use but its not common and would not cause the unit to seize. Very strange.

Re: Frozen 60\" MMM

I've got over 50 hrs on my 4115 60" MMM since 05 June and it is purring right along. You might notice that the GB gets hot to the touch after an hour or so use. I checked with my JD dealer and they assured me this was normal. Just thought I would let you know.

My neighbor purchased a new x485 with associated 62' (?) MMM and it had such a loud high pitch whine to it that the dealer gave him ear protectors and the people at JD command said "That's the way it is." He told me he was going to send it back for a refund under the 30 day rule. Even though his yard is 800 feet from my rocking chair on the porch I could hear the gear box screeching away. It's design is different from ours thank goodness.

Hint for working on the blades and cleaning the underside is to place a 3 foot 4x4 behind the rear and lift the front until the unit is vertical, resting the J-Pin brackets on the 4x4. Helps to have a fence post, telephone pole or a column of some sort to tie it to for safety. The rear wheels are unloaded at this point. Watch the U-joint/pto shaft when lifting so it doesn't get jammed.

Enjoy

Re: Frozen 60\" MMM

Bishoff, I may have jammed the driveshaft on there somehow., what I will do is disassemble the driveshaft and remove the MMM, then i will see what is holding the rest of the shaft on the tractor. Seems like I should be able to get that thing off once I do that. I will let you know how it works

Re: Frozen 60\" MMM

My best guess is since the gearbox is made in Spain I think they may have been refering to the oil that is put in the gearbox to prevent rusting. They shipped top me without any "operating" oil in the gearbox. Just a guess anyway, but I think you guys are right, they did not ship to me with any proper oil in the gearbox. I put the mower back on and it runs great and the dealer sharpened the blades for me.

Thanks for the advice on sharpening, I take it into consideration since my first shapening will be in about 2-3 weeks.
