Frozen 60\" MMM
Well, it a story anyways. I decided to mow the field 4+ acres with my 4115 and 60" MMM. It took me about 6+ hours as it hasen't been mowed it over twenty years. It had alot of scrub and weeds and hidden rocks and branches so I had to keep the speed down a bit. Along the way I chipped a few rocks (nice gouges in the blades) and even stallled the tractor twice when a larger than normal segments of buried tree branches became stuck in the mower. I finished my first cut of the field and decided to do the house lot lawn. I started to mow got about forty feet and the tractor stalled out. I restarted the the engine it stalled again and again. I'm getting a bit worried now. I tried once more it stalls again. So I go back to the driveway pull of the mower looking for wire, rope or whatever might be underneath the mower. I found nothing. I put the mower back on (took only 2 minutes, its real easy) started the tractor again, engaged the mid PTO, the tractor stalls. Now I'm even worried. I'm think I have a hydraulic problem or I've jammed the mid-PTO. I pull off the mower again (I'm getting real good at this now) and want to check the mid-PTO to make sure it is spinning. I'm standing by the tractor put the parking brake on, started the tractor, engaged the mid PTO and trying to look underneath the tractor for a rotating mid-PTO shat. Guess what, the tractor stalls. Now I'm confused but for only about 5 minutes beacause I realized I have to be sitting in the seat or the deadman's seat saftey feature comes into play. Now I get a cinder block put it in the seat start the tractor, and engaed the PTO and I see it spinning (what a releif). My attention now is focuesd on the mower. I turn it up on it end and rotate the blades with my hands, no problem here I say. I dropped the mower back down grab the PTO shaft on the MMM to try and rotate it. It doesn't budge. I found the problem. The gear box of the MMM is frozen. I read the manual again and it said check oil after 100 hrs, I only put 6.7 hours on it so far. Now it is time to see how MY dealer responded. Called them on monday morning and after going over the reglular possible problems that might cause this situation they said they would pick it up tuesday. By the way this is the dealer I picked not for being closest (they are 75 miles away and I have two dealers within 15 miles and 5 others within 20 to 40 miles) but this dealer was the one I felt I was most comfortable with and would provided the best service. As the story comes to a close the dealer picked up the mower tuesday and I had it back on thursday all ready to go. As it turns out someone at the dealership had forgotten to replace the oil in the gear box (used for shipping) with the proper gear-box oil for actual mowing usage so now I have a new gear-box on my MMM and it did not cost a dime for transportation.
The moral of the story is:
"ITS THE DEALER NOT JUST THE PRICE"
