Just an update to this problem. Local mechanic finally got around to helping me with the tratcor. Pulling off the PTO valve was embarrasingly simple. Undo linkage, couple of bolts, some light raps with a punch to break it free, and it pulled off. It turns out that the actuator rod that enters the valve actually runs all the way through the valve and protrudes out the other side, fixed by a c-clip. The mechanic pointed out that you could look behind the c-clip and see that its not a very good design. Its open into the valve, with only an o-ring behind it. We freed up the valve after soaking it for a time. A big gob of grease on the end should keep moisture out now. Valve now works like butta!

Those are sweet words.:) I'm really glad it was "goop" instead of galling. Now that you know how that valve works, everytime you engage the PTO, you will see it operating in your mind's eye. When you feel anything abnormal, you'll know right where to look for it. Thanks for posting back and letting us know your good outcome.

Sounds like some well thought out engineering. If NH doesn't want to fix their inadequate design on certain parts why can't they make available a bulletin that addresses the problem and shows the proper procedure to repair it? It would certainly be better than a person paying to have their tractor transported in for repair and face a huge bill over a trivial problem. One cannot blame the dealer because he has to charge to pay the employees.
Sometimes it is little issues like this that get spread around and detour buyers from that particular brand.

WHAT A GREAT RESOURCE!

My TC40 developed stiff PTO problems, so I came here to ask for help.

First I did a search and found this thread, followed the advice and now I am back mowing again!

Thanks, guys, for advice from 3 years ago.

Mike, welcome. You'll get more response if you start your own new thread. Be specific about what you need to troubleshoot, what is frozen, what doesn't work. Also how many hours on your tractor, is it new to you, etc. Lots of help available here.
Jim
