I don't think John Deere is known for fuel efficiancy. I don't know if a 5093E compares to the ones you are looking at but I can burn through $150 of fuel in a day easily. A neighbour with a similar sized massey can do the same work for 5-10% less fuel. I do find the Deere a nicer tractor to drive but it is very thirsty.

Do you have a hole in your gas tank? I'm serious in asking this. My 5410 (85 HP) at normal operating RPM (not PTO), will burn less than a gallon per hour. Even at the high end of a gallon per hour (for math simplicity reasons), and diesel at ~$4.00 locally, it would take me over 37.5 hours of straight running.

Nobody runs at RPM speed 100% of the time - most of what I do is under 1600 RPM's - which is half of RPM speed for me. All brands will burn relatively the same amount of fuel.

My 6430 Premium has a hole in its tank for sure! 7.2 Gallons per hour under full load, well when ever its pulling the hardest, in F4 going up a 13% grade. Usually when I'm tilling it gets around 5-6 gallons per hour. It's pretty thirsty.

$150 a day is quite a bit of fuel for a 5093. Like around 38-40 gallons. In an 8 hour run time thats 4.5-5 gallons per hour or one gallon + every 15 minutes. Even in a 12 hour day thats over 3 gallons per hour. You would have to load that engine very hard for a long time to burn that much fuel. I'm not saying it's not possible but, it would be tough.

I just checked the Nebraska tractor test for the 5093 and it says about 5gal/hr (18.9l/hr) under full load which is exactly what I get when I work it hard. I don't idle around in my tractor, its not a toy. I try to run it at its full potential otherwise I am wasting time and money. I also pay over $5 per gallon for fuel here..

The key to look at is the line on the graph at tractor data.com that shows HP hours per gallon of fuel burned. For the 6430 it tops out at 15 HP hour/gallon. Compared to my 5045E that tops out at 14HP hours/gallon. It shows you that the bigger tractor that burns twice as much fuel per hour is more efficient because it is doing more then twice as much work.

My 5101 must be a toy. I don't start it up in the shop, throttle up to 2400 rpm and pull a 18' disc harrow for 14 hours straight (mfwd engaged and the PTO on just to be sure the neighbors know I'm serious).

Can you help me calculate how much money I'm wasting when running at 1.4 gph versus your $150/ day?

My has a 5065M and the main thing she and our son have used it for so far is with the 7' pull-type Bush Hog and so far hasn't slashed anything that it won't pull in PTO-E setting. She hasn't used much fuel at all, I think it's doing quite well, much better than I thought it would.

Maybe there is something wrong with mine if I am going through so much fuel? With an 8' heavy duty rotary mower at 5mph I burn about 3gal/hr, with a 9' flail mower conditioner at 8mph I use 5gal/hr, just tedding hay I am using over 2! If all of you are doing much better then this maybe I should visit the dealer.

8 mph X 9 ft = 8.7 acres per hour and works out to .57 gallons per acre. Who's doing better then that?

Ag. engineers estimate that diesel fuel consumption averages 0.048 gallons (US)/hr per rated PTO HP. This link may help you evaluate how you stack up against the averages for various field operations: Estimating Farm Fuel Requirements

I didn't think I was doing that bad considering I could mow 40 or 50 acres before lunch, even though I go through almost a tank in that time.
