I was fueled up my VW tdi Passat Wagon last week, $74.25. When I went into pay I remarked to the station attendant that "$100 will get you a pizza and a full tank of fuel." She replied that she was supprised that my car took more to fill up than her Rendezvou. Her fill up is only $62.00. I said that for that $74.25 I had driven 897 miles.....

I'm envious. Some day, I'd like to pick up a Passat Wagon TDI. I bought my first TDI about a month ago - 2001 Jetta Sedan TDI. Loving the 700 miles per tank, but I'll never get 900 out of it. I'm only getting 47'ish mpg's and with the 15 gal tank, it just won't take me as far.

But, with my 120 mile per day commute, I used to have to fill up my 20 gallon Jeep Wrangler tank every other day. I'm just tickled that I'm down to once per week :)

Almost forgot. Diesel in Waynesboro PA (southern state line near I81) $3.99/gal

And where in this country would we use such a train?

Solutions that might work in Europe and Japan, because of their population density, wont work here.

Mike, I agree with your second point above, that not all foreign solutions work here. But I think a better train network would be an enormous benefit and improvement to our overall transportation "system" (which it really isn't). I fly every 2-4 weeks and air travel is absolutely awful. For any trip that starts and ends on the same land mass, high speed train would be a viable option. Sure, the train itself can't go 550mph (using any current tech), but if you factor in the delays and hassles inherent in airports, the total trip time for a train could be similar, sometimes less. I know from where I am a train and flight to Chicago take about the same time, factoring in all time spent (driving takes less than either).

What do you call the subsidies for ethanol? These same subsidies are also the reason the cost of anything made with corn, i.e., almost every food, are going through the roof. A brilliant policy, using a food source for fuel and giving subsidies to build more plants to take even more food and turn it into fuel.

We don't need research funding or tax incentives to find more oil. We just need government to get out of the way.

Agree. Govt provides lots of subsidies and market distortions. And corn ethanol is among the best examples ever. If we really wanted ethanol fuel, why not lift the tariffs on imported ethanol and sugar? Sugar ethanol is much cheaper and more viable. And there are many regs in the way of other forms of more affordable energy.

Just a few comments:

1. I paid $2.999 for gas today in Purcell, OK.

2. My previous post claiming I paid $1.99 a few days ago was a typo not an intentional error. When I happened to notice it, it was too late to edit. Interestingly, no one commented on it or challenged it.

I have a farmhouse rental... 3 br, 1 bath with oil heat! In Feburary, I got $86,00 in rent! It was rent or fill the 275 gallon oil tank. They chose the oil tank fill... probably a good decision over frozen water lines. Behind in rendtnow and will probably never catch up. Almost mid march and they still have not paid march rent... When is enough enough? Worst part is one of the kids living there is MINE... Thinking of moving him home (he is 20 and going to college full time) and shutting down the house... No water or heat.
